The Indigenous Forest Fire Team (IFFT) plays a vital role in protecting our rainforest by providing rapid response support through equipment preparation, navigating difficult terrain, and collaborating with local authorities, acting as community liaisons to communicate fire prevention messages and address local concerns, patrolling National Road 48 to detect and extinguish fires, escalating uncontrolled incidents to protect forests and documenting all incidents with details for advisory review.
Equipped with motorbikes, air blowers, and essential tools, the team promotes community-led conservation in the Southern Cardamom region while supporting REDD+ goals to reduce deforestation emissions and strengthen indigenous communities' connection to the land.

On December 23, 2025, the Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project, implemented by Wildlife Alliance, held a training session at the Veal Pi Patrol Station for the Chorng indigenous community. This event launched the Indigenous Forest Fire Team (IFFT), empowering local guardians to protect forest ecosystems from fires.
The training covered Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for using firefighting equipment such as fire trucks, air blowers, and water sprayers.

The clouded leopard, with its beautiful dusky-grey blotches and long tail that provides essential balance while climbing, is truly a remarkable creature. These elusive animals spend their days resting high in the trees and roam the forests at night in search of food. Sadly, they are now locally extinct in places like Singapore, Taiwan, and possibly Hainan Island and Vietnam. However, there is still hope as they continue to exist in the forests of Cambodia.
Despite their resilience, the clouded leopard population is facing significant challenges. With fewer than 10,000 adults left and fewer than 1,000 in any single subpopulation, these enchanting cats are at risk. They have been listed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List since 2008, and the threats of deforestation and poaching for the wildlife trade weigh heavily on their future. While legal protections exist, it is critical that we come together to protect their habitats and ensure that these magnificent animals continue to thrive in the wild.

Mountains are called the world's "water towers" as they provide freshwater for over half of the global population. Mountains support many ecosystems, such as tropical forests, hot deserts, and polar ice caps. They host nearly one-quarter of all land species, help regulate the climate and are important for keeping soil healthy.
On International Mountain Day, let us pledge to preserve these vital landscapes, particularly the Cardamom Mountains in Cambodia.

In the early morning of November 24, 2025, a patrol unit from Wildlife Alliance and the Ministry of Environment discovered a white sack hidden in the dense forest. Inside, they found a Bengal Slow Loris, tied up and exhibiting signs of stress, a stark reminder of recent poaching activity.
The loris was gently placed in a cage, appearing exhausted yet stable. A veterinary assessment confirmed its good health, leading to its release on the evening of November 25 in a protected forest area. With a renewed spirit, the loris climbed a tree and navigated confidently before disappearing from sight.
This remarkable story inspires us to embrace the vital need for wildlife protection and conservation. This Wildlife Conservation Day, let us unite in our pledge to end snaring and poaching, ensuring that wildlife can thrive in peace within their natural habitats.
