The sacred forests are traditionally used by the Chorng and Por Peoples to exercise spiritual beliefs. These traditions have been passed down as ancestral practice and are still carried on by many indigenous people residing within the area. Currently, the Samkos REDD+ assists 27 communities across Pursat and Battambang provinces.

The project has provided support to the local indigenous community in Ta Des Village to map out the land boundaries where they can maintain access and continue to leverage these areas to practice their spiritual beliefs.

Since 2023, the Samkos REDD+ project has constructed over 65 solar-powered water wells, bringing daily access to clean water to over 1200 families across 25 villages. These shared wells have significantly improved the lives of the local communities, especially during dry season, when clean water is essential. Each well, on average, provides daily water to 20 families and each water tank can store up 3000 litres of water.

Mrs. Thoun Sreyoun, a member of the local community shared, “The well does not only help with daily use, but also aids my family expenses, as it supports watering agricultural crops near my house, especially for livestock farming without having to spend money on water like before.”

By harnessing solar energy for clean water, the project is helping local communities build a more sustainable future - one well at a time.

Meet Mr On Sovann, who has led the Chi Phat Community-Based Ecotourism (CBET) managerial committee for 7 years. Being a lifelong resident, he’s a firsthand witness to Chi Phat’s transformation.

“Chi Phat has changed so much, and it wouldn’t have been possible without Wildlife Alliance. For 20 years they’ve been supporting multiple projects here, and it’s a completely different place compared to before.

I’m privileged to be the chief of the Community Eco-tourism project, doing my part to help it be successful and help make Chi Phat prosperous. Ecotourism keeps providing good jobs for 640 families here, and we’re happy to welcome guests from all over the world.

The Southern Cardamom REDD+ project has built infrastructure while CBET has brought alternative livelihoods so people now can earn income without using the forest. Chi Phat is an example of sustainable development done right.”

Mr. Reon Roet and Mr. Tit Som have been working as Project Community Rangers since December 2025. They are members of the Chorng Indigenous community from Pralay Commune, Koh Kong Province. Once former poachers and loggers in these very forests, now they earn their living by joining the Project in protecting the wildlife and nature.

Although ranger work comes with its fair share of hardships, they see every challenge as a meaningful part of their community’s contribution to conservation of the forest. They share that being rangers is not only a way of earning an honest living, but is a way of contributing their part in keeping the remaining forests standing for generations to come.

After over 25 years, our founder and CEO Suwanna Gauntlett has stepped aside, with Chief Operating Officer John Willis elevated to lead Wildlife Alliance, continuing the organization's steadfast mission to protect the Cardamom Landscape and the wildlife that calls it home.

Suwanna built this organization on the belief that conservation and development are inseparable - and the Cardamoms stand as proof of that vision. She will remain connected to the organization through the Board of Directors and we wish her well in the next chapter.

We’re joining forces with Auntie Rana's to support Wildlife Alliance’s Care for Rescued Wildlife project. This partnership supports round-the-clock animal care, food and medicine at Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Centre.

The Indigenous Forest Fire Team (IFFT) plays a vital role in protecting our rainforest by providing rapid response support through equipment preparation, navigating difficult terrain, and collaborating with local authorities, acting as community liaisons to communicate fire prevention messages and address local concerns, patrolling National Road 48 to detect and extinguish fires, escalating uncontrolled incidents to protect forests and documenting all incidents with details for advisory review.
Equipped with motorbikes, air blowers, and essential tools, the team promotes community-led conservation in the Southern Cardamom region while supporting REDD+ goals to reduce deforestation emissions and strengthen indigenous communities' connection to the land.

On December 23, 2025, the Southern Cardamom REDD+ Project, implemented by Wildlife Alliance, held a training session at the Veal Pi Patrol Station for the Chorng indigenous community. This event launched the Indigenous Forest Fire Team (IFFT), empowering local guardians to protect forest ecosystems from fires.
The training covered Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for using firefighting equipment such as fire trucks, air blowers, and water sprayers.
