Experiments in Opera

Experiments in Opera Experiments in Opera is a composer-led community of opera-makers and performers.

Experiments in Opera is a composer- and performer-driven initiative, featuring recent and new works with unorthodox answers to the traditional questions about how to connect words, story and music. Our activities emerge from a pronounced need to nurture composers drawn towards extending their work beyond the standard concert experience and into the hybrid space of the theater, performance, install

ation, dance and storytelling arts. The core members of the Experiments in Opera collaborative are Matthew Welch, Jason Cady and Aaron Siegel.

“Operas drawn from the headlines can feel dated by the time they make it to stage. This work was optimally timed for our ongoing scourge of dubious health influencers.”

Constance: A Confession, presented in Brooklyn by Experiments in Opera, satirizes our digital age with style.

“Director Shannon Sindelar and choreography Celia Krefter staged Constance with lively variety, while music director Dmitriy Glivinskiy led the musicians comprising the four-person “hypercube” chamber accompaniment with gamesome aplomb.”

Review of Constance: A Confession, a new multi-author opera created by the “Writers’ Room” of the Experiments in Opera company; viewed May 18, 2026, with further performances having run through May 22. What would happen if you assembled four writer-and-composer teams, challenged them to write ...

The reviews keep coming...

Chamber opera is on a roll! I caught the penultimate performance of Constance: A Confession at the HERE Arts Center tonight and exited laughing and marveling. A composite work cobbled together by two foursomes of librettists and composers within the Experiments in Opera consortium, it’s a clever t...

"Shannon Sindelar has just the right touch in staging. She fully appreciates the librettists’ words as a musical line in their own right. They rhyme, they have a beat, and they sing."

Experiments in Opera’s new opera, Constance: A Confession, is the sixth opera created in a unique collaborative Writers' Room. It is modeled on work...

"a sharp, strange, and savagely entertaining chamber opera about manipulation, self-delusion, and the frightening ease with which charisma can masquerade as enlightenment. "

Four composers, four librettists, four stellar singers: a wickedly funny operatic experiment turns a startling subject into theatrical gold.

Thanks to for a thoughtful review of Constance and props to for their tremendous contributions to this new opera!!
