Voices from diverse fields of knowledge and cultures bring new possibilities to space governance by drawing on perspectives often left out of policy conversations.

The Bolivia Moon Agreement is a reimagining of the 1979 Moon Agreement, developed by students of law, medicine, engineering, tourism, psychology, international relations, among others. They reworked the legal framework through their own ideas and worldviews, weaving Indigenous and Spanish concepts into the text.

We’re closing out World Space Week with the message that if space governance were to be truly equitable, it has to include voices like these.

No single treaty or institution will resolve the problem of space inequity. The architecture of space governance is still evolving, which makes this the right moment to pursue layered reforms that strengthen international cooperation, expand access to resources, and ensure that the benefits of space are shared more widely.

We must embed principles of fairness and accountability into the foundations of space governance. In doing so, we can set precedents that protect humanity and the environment on Earth and beyond.

Our policy brief proposes ideas for putting these principles into practice.

It’s World Space Week! The global celebration marks 59 years since the Outer Space Treaty (OST) entered into force, establishing the legal framework for keeping space peaceful and accessible to all nations.

Carrying this milestone forward, we are sharing a publication we released earlier this year: Equity in Space Governance, developed with HWLE Lawyers. The report examines the OST nearly six decades on, recognizing how far humanity’s reach has grown and identifying where stronger safeguards and clearer accountability are needed to protect people and the space environment.

Throughout the week, we’ll be talking about what progress in space means for human rights and the case for building equity into the rules shaping our future.
