The Andrew Goodman Foundation

The Andrew Goodman Foundation We make young voices and votes a powerful force in democracy. We’re rooted in a powerful story from the past.

At the height of the Civil Rights Movement, Andrew Goodman joined Freedom Summer 1964 to register African-Americans to vote. On his first day in Mississippi, he and two other civil rights workers, James Chaney and Michael Schwerner, were murdered by the Ku Klux Klan. The Andrew Goodman Foundation was created in 1966 by Robert and Carolyn Goodman to carry on the spirit and the purpose of their son

Andrew’s life. Today, our work harnesses the legacy of courageous civic action to grow new leaders of change: young adults bitten by the spirit of activism (like Andy). Our campus coalitions spread a culture of participatory democracy, promoting the right to vote while incubating a new civic-minded generation.

Support Our Netroots Panel!

Voting for Netroots Nation panels has begun! We are proud of the submission Evan Malbrough and Yael Bromberg, Esq. have put forward focusing on youth voting, voting rights, and how college communities can mobilize in the lead-up to the midterms. The proposed panel features three young organizers from Georgia, North Carolina, and New York State (by way of Georgia), each of whom has successfully organized their peers to both get out the vote and resist voter suppression. Joining these youth organizers and advocates are a college administrator dedicated to the civics-mission of higher education, and a constitutional rights litigator who is also a legal scholar of the Twenty-Sixth Amendment. We will collectively discuss the power of organizing, advocacy, litigation, and public education, and how these strategies can work together to build and shift power.

Panel Name: Youth Voting Rights, the 26th Amendment, & Protecting Democracy

To vote for this panel, you must first register with Netroots using your email address, and then cast your vote! You can vote once per day. Voting ends this Friday March 13 at 11:59 p.m. Pacific. Panel description below.

What you don’t see in this photo are the planning meetings, late nights, and conversations that made events like March To The Polls possible.

Andrew Goodman Campus Teams, like those at Tuskegee University, spent the year strengthening student civic engagement on campus and in the surrounding community.

AGF loves supporting the students who make that work happen! Consider making AGF a part of your end-of-year giving so we can keep supporting the next generation of civic leaders! https://andrewgoodman.org/donate/

In The Thread, The Andrew Goodman Foundation’s Director of Programs, Caroline Smith, highlighted concern about the Guilford County Board of Elections’ decision not to include early voting locations on the campuses of North Carolina A&T and UNC Greensboro, part of a broader national trend of excluding college campuses from early voting sites.

College campuses are where students live, learn, and work, which is why on-campus early voting is so important. Research shows that campuses with polling stations on Election Day correlated with a voting rate increase of 5.3%, and those with them on both Election Day and during the early voting period correlated with an increase of 7.4%. Removing these sites creates unnecessary obstacles for student voters and undermines efforts to make sure young people can use their voices and votes in elections.

Sixty-one years ago, a young Andrew Goodman, risking everything to fight for the fundamental right to vote, stood on the front lines of the Civil Rights Movement. His courage and sacrifice remind us that democracy is not a given; it’s something we must work for, protect, and pass on to the next generation.

Today, The Andrew Goodman Foundation carries forward his legacy by empowering young civic leaders across the country to take action and make their voices heard. Visit the link below to support our work empowering youth voices on this .

During this season of thankfulness and on what would have been Andrew Goodman’s 82nd birthday, we are grateful for the life of conviction and purpose Andy led. In his short 20 years, he spoke out and stood up for what he believed in: that all Americans should be able to exercise their right to vote without discrimination. We strive to every day as we continue to make young voices and votes a powerful force in our democracy. Please join us as we celebrate the life and legacy of Andrew Goodman today!
