Guides Association Of New York City

Guides Association Of New York City We are a not-for-profit professional organization providing continuing education to our members, and advocacy on behalf of the New York City tourism sector.

Founded in 1974, GANYC is one of the oldest guides associations in the United States. We are a not-for-profit organization providing ongoing education to our members in the vast and ever changing City of New York. Through the efforts of our Board of Directors, committees and individual members we work with the city government and agencies to solve problems and help bring to light the needs of the

tourism industry in New York. We also arrange exclusive tours for our members, secure speakers and locations for our monthly public meetings. All our members are licensed, professional tourist guides.

GANYC held its June meeting at St. James Presbyterian Church, in Harlem.

Jim Carr, President of NFTGA, addressed the members, and our guest speaker was Reverend Derrick McQueen, pastor of Saint James Presbyterian Church.

We had heard from many GANYC Committees, as our organization works toward a productive tourism Summer.

GANYC members can soon take advantage of another certification course! This course allows our members to enhance their skills, and learn how to create & sell tours as well.

GANYC's Certification Committee is pleased to announce the schedule for our next TWO cohorts.

The Certification program helps members focus on and develop the skills that excellent guides share. Through the program, participants will implement their learning through group activities and the development of an actual tour that they will present to the Committee and then, ideally, be ready to sell to clients. Currently at least a half dozen graduates are actively using tours they developed in the program to make money.

The program runs for 18 hours across six meeting dates and culminates in a private presentation for the committee members. Outside of classes participants should expect to spend a *minimum* of three hours per week completing readings, preparing for in-class assignments, preparing for the walking and bus tour practicums as well as researching and developing their final project.

One session incorporates a bus tour and another incorporates a walking tour. Participants work together to improve their skills and offer feedback to each other.

IT IS REQUIRED TO ATTEND EACH DATE, NO MAKE-UP DATES ARE OFFERED.

The cost is $300.

The following are the dates for the TUESDAY COHORT:
8/18 6-9pm
8/25 6-9pm
9/1 11am-2pm (bus tour practicum)
9/8 6-9pm
9/15 3-6pm (walking tour practicum)
9/29 6-9pm
Final Presentations: 10/5 -OR- 10/6 6-9pm

The following are the dates for the THURSDAY COHORT:
8/20 6-9pm
8/27 6-9pm
9/3 11am-2pm (bus tour practicum)
9/10 6-9pm
9/17 3-6pm (walking tour practicum)
10/1 6-9pm
Final Presentations: 10/8 -OR- 10/9 6-9pm

Please note that attendance is mandatory and Tuesday and Thursday cohort dates are NOT interchangeable.

We have found through the years that one of the most valuable aspects of the program is the group cohesion that develops over time. Each session builds on the prior session and is a continuing dialogue both with the instructors AND cohort members, hence the insistence on full attendance. (In cases of severe illnesses, the committee will consider moving a participant to start over in the next session without charging an additional fee.)

Please feel free to reach out with any questions. Registration to open soon.
