Waterfront Alliance

Waterfront Alliance Together, we lead the way for thriving and resilient waterfronts, shorelines, and coastlines.

The Waterfront Alliance was started as a project of the Municipal Art Society of New York in 2000 to capitalize on opportunities whose outcomes would have considerable repercussions for the waterfront. Critical land use, regulatory, and environmental decisions being made in this decade will determine how the New York metropolitan area will look and function for years to come, and how future genera

tions are able to access the water and enjoy this great resource that is literally at our doorsteps. As a small, growing entity, MWA was able to accomplish surprising results, including the creation of a distinct “Waterfront Committee” at the City Council, the sponsorship of the “Blue Links” campaign to strengthen community-based efforts to revitalize the waterfront, which led to $261 million in Federal funding, and the successful “Design the Edge” project, which demonstrates innovation in transforming the water’s edge, block by block, in a way that is habitat-friendly, safely accessible, and environmentally sustainable. In 2006, the leaders of MWA and MAS agreed that it was time to build on its solid reputation and strong assets (experiences, large base of support, network of connections, and resource of information and comprehensive data) and spin the project off. We officially became an independent 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in November of 2007.

We hosted some awesome events this weekend with our wonderful community partners!

On Saturday, our Full Moon Celebration in the Bruckner Mott Haven Community Garden was a ton of fun 🌕 The event featured all local vendors and had almost 100 visitors! Our programming included an arts & crafts table for kids to build their own green/blue utopia.

Attendees even got to peer through telescopes and make smores around the campfire. The band was a hit and people danced into the night 🎵 It was truly a night to remember!

Sunday was our Community Day Street Fair, where we had 9 amazing partners tabling in the Seaport with us. It was beautiful weather to engage community members and teach about our work.

Thank you to everyone who showed up & participated in these community events this weekend. We enjoyed meeting each of you 🩵

⚓ A new chapter is underway for the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal.

The South Brooklyn Marine Terminal (SBMT) in Sunset Park, Brooklyn has earned WEDG® (Waterfront Edge Design Guidelines) Verification from the Waterfront Alliance, recognizing the project as a national model for resilient, sustainable, and community-responsive working waterfront redevelopment.

Developed by Equinor’s U.S. affiliate with a design team led by Jacobs and constructed by Skanska, the 75-acre port facility is the largest maritime industrial project to receive WEDG Verification.

From clean energy infrastructure to workforce development, this project represents a major investment in the future of New York Harbor. 🌊

From Albany to communities across the region, the call for climate resilience is growing louder. 🌊🏛️

On May 6, 2026, the Rise to Resilience (R2R) Coalition gathered in Albany for the Coalition’s third annual Advocacy Day. The day was full of meetings with state legislators to advance critical climate resilience policies and ensure communities across New York are better prepared for increasing flooding and extreme weather.

We focused on advancing two legislative priorities from the Coalition’s 2026 Policy Platform:
💧 The Rain Ready NY Act (S4071A / A7467A)
💧Climate Resilient NY Act (S3590A / A8088A)

Together, these bills represent practical, forward-looking measures to help communities address increasing flood risk and strengthen resilience planning statewide.

Building resilient waterfronts takes collaboration, leadership, and sustained advocacy, and this work is more urgent than ever.

The future of our waterfronts isn’t a distant vision, it’s something we’re building right now.

At the 2026 Waterfront Conference, we came together around a shared imperative: moving from ideas to action to ensure our coastlines are resilient, equitable, and ready for what’s ahead.

A clear example was the conference’s focus on Blue Highways, which is an emerging strategy to leverage New York City’s waterways for freight movement, congestion reduction, and climate resilience.

The work doesn’t end at the conference—it continues in every partnership, policy, and project that brings these ideas to life.
