Metropolitan Maltese Rescue

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue Our vision is to be an active partner of a no-kill community where there are no homeless pets. Every foster and permanent home is carefully screened.

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue is a non-profit corporation (501(c) (3)) dedicated to placing homeless Maltese and Maltese-mixes in loving, responsible, permanent homes. Metropolitan Maltese Rescue (MetroMalts) is an all-volunteer organization founded in 1998 by a group of Maltese dog lovers in New York City. MetroMalts volunteers foster and place Maltese found as strays, surrendered by their owners, or rescued from shelters. We use every means at our disposal to keep Maltese out of shelters and in good forever-after homes. Information provided by potential adopters is used to make sure that our Maltese are placed with care-givers who are best suited to their individual personalities. We remain available after adoption to help resolve any concerns or problems that might arise. We gladly accept donations of time, professional advice and care (such as veterinarians and trainers), and financial assistance. We welcome people who just love the breed and want to help. After all, that's how MetroMalts began. MetroMalts is a proud member of the Mayor's Alliance for NYC's Animals, Inc., a distinguished group of local shelter and rescue organizations dedicated to making ours a "no kill" city.

After a long and very successful run of 29 years, it is with heavy hearts that Metropolitan Maltese Rescue announces our closing.

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue was begun in 1998 by a thoughtful, caring, altruistic group of New Yorkers who loved the Maltese breed. At the group’s inception, the Maltese breed was highly popular in NYC, and thus many were populating our local shelters, as shelter intake always reflects the breeds found in the local population. Our founders were concerned about this situation, and wanted to help the dogs in our area, both by pulling dogs from the shelters and taking dogs in directly from surrendering owners, so they never had to enter a shelter.

Metropolitan Maltese Rescue has taken-in 1,283 Maltese and Maltese-mix dogs (with a few other breeds or mixes occasionally as well) during the group’s existence. These dogs all came right into foster care in the homes of our volunteers, where they had a safe and enriching environment of love, good food, proper grooming, and medical and behavioral care when warranted. They were gotten to be known as individuals and as family members and with their individual personality and needs in mind, we found the absolutely right match of adoptive home for each dog.

All of our good work was done staffed only by volunteers and charitable donations from the public. Without you, we couldn’t have existed. We want to thank all of those who over the years have served or helped Metropolitan Maltese Rescue: our volunteers, our donors, the veterinary teams and groomers who helped our dogs, our adopters, and the public who cheered us on and spread the good word.

We are proud of all we have accomplished. As said by Margaret Mead: Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world; indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.

Have you ever seen a happier pup? Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate Andy had a happy visit to the pet supply shop this week and picked out a tie-dyed owl. Poor Andy only had a whole basket full of toys at home. He really did need this one extra toy, and who could resist that face?

And who can resist the weekend? TGIF.

For those that follow Metropolitan Maltese Rescue regularly, we bet you see those loooong legs and know who this is right away. It is a new picture of our beautiful graduate Salt (of Salt and Peppa fame!), now renamed Soy. Soy has stopped by to say 🍁Happy Fall 🍁 and show off his favorite sunny post-bath perch.

And if you have a Maltese, you know that white dog + bath = rain. Always. And we have a doozy forecast for this weekend. Thanks, Soy.

But the good news in that is the word weekend! TGIF.

This week we are sharing a throw back to 2024 when Raylan, a Metropolitan Maltese Rescue foster dog, added an exciting kayaking adventure to his time in foster care with his foster mom and foster brother. Have life jacket, will boat!

We are sure his continued life in his adoptive home is just as fun, if likely less nautical.

Weekends are fun, too. TGIF.

On this solemn date of September 11th, we thought we'd share a little something to provide a needed smile.

Here, unrelated to 9/11, is a throwback photo of two Metropolitan Maltese Rescue dogs, Bea and Jack, who were both in foster care and in downtown Manhattan at the time the photo was taken. We love our dogs and we love our city. And no matter the date, we love Fridays. TGIF.

We hope you can find as great a place to hang out this holiday weekend as Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate Paddington has done, whether you are in the city, the suburbs, or someplace else. Have a great weekend! TGIF

Another summer Friday, another possibility for a lovely beach weekend. Admittedly, the forecast for this weekend in NYC is not the best, but this Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate has all good hopes. Paws crossed for a good weekend for all! TGIF.

We at Metropolitan Maltese Rescue love hearing from out graduates, even if it is only to let us know how much these dogs have been loved and how much they mean to their families.

We have received word that one of our graduates, Malibu, has passed away two months short of her 17th birthday. She came to Metropolitan Maltese Rescue, surrendered by her owners, back when she was 8 years old and had proven to be a bad match with their very young child.

Malibu’s adopter, now mourning her, says that “Malibu was a beautiful, prickly girl who had her boundaries.” She lived most of her life in her adoptive second home, along with 2 other MMR graduates, so those boundaries worked out just fine for our Malibu! 💕

And as Malibu’s name evokes the beach and leisure activities, here we are at another summer weekend that evokes the same, so this one’s for her! TGIF

We are unsure if Metropolitan Maltese Rescue's former foster dog Paradise was incognito for fun or from being in a witness protection program, or if she was just drag-friendly, but here is a flashback shot of her on a brisk walk about the neighborhood. Smiling all the way.

We smile all the way to the weekends, too. TGIF.

This Metropolitan Maltese Rescue graduate finds that waking up isn’t so bad when you catch that first morning light and realize it is Friday! Stay cool, stay cozy, and greet the weekend well. TGIF.
