Last Friday, we hosted a panel discussion that was the apex of the fellowship research on Maya Deren and her Ukrainian roots. We are happy, excited, and overwhelmed, but most of all grateful for the positive and encouraging feedback we received from the audience. The words below fuel our enthusiasm to continue our mission to ensure that the voices of Ukrainian-American artists are heard, celebrated, and preserved for generations to come.

💌 "In terms of quality, it was one of the most well-organized and well-moderated talks I have been to in a long time."- KN

💌 "I was very taken with last Friday's panel discussion, and thank you deeply for uncovering Ukrainian heritage in the States. The whole evening stirred deep emotions in me, sadness, but even more important, inspiration. Thank you." - LD

We would like to express our gratitude to the participating artists and the fellow: Lily Selthofner, Slinco, Katya Grokhovsky, Daria Dorosh, and Lily’s research advisor, Erica Hillary Stein, PhD. (Associate Professor and Chair of Film at Vassar).

Big thanks to the team at the National Academy of Design for hosting the event.

Our deep appreciation goes to the Borshch of Art’s donors and supporters of the Fellowship program, as well as to institutional funders: UNWLA and Razom, for sponsoring the stipends and honoraria.

We are excited to introduce you to one of the speakers at the upcoming panel discussion on Maya Deren, taking place on June 12.

❇Slinko is a multidisciplinary artist who works in film, sculpture, photography, and installation. Her art directly addresses the connection between the tangible and intangible aspects of Ukrainian identity and Soviet heritage.

❇ Her birthplace, Bakhmut, is in the Donbas region of Eastern Ukraine, which has been a front line since 2014 and has a history of Soviet-era extractivism in salt and coal mines.

❇ Slinko's work creatively delves into the history of Ukraine through site specificity – she has returned to Ukraine many times to create works that contend with her identity and past.

🎯Join us on June 12 for the culmination of the Ukrainian-American Arts Research Fellowship and learn about Maya Deren and the contemporary Ukrainian-born American artists who will share their perspective on Deren’s artistic legacy.

🎤Featuring Slinko, Daria Dorosh, and Katya Grokhovsky. Facilitated by Lily Selthofner (Spring 2025 Fellow)

🔮Did you know that Philip Guston’s parents immigrated to Canada from Odesa, Ukraine?

Near the end of his career, Guston created paintings that show his search for his roots and ancestry and his interest in Odesa 💙💛 and the Black Sea.

For decades, the Ukrainian lens and facts in the biographies of artists like Louise Nevelson, Maya Deren, and Philip Guston have been omitted.

🐝The Borshch of Art team is working to change that. We offer programs that research and preserve these stories for future generations and ensure that Ukrainian parts are accurately recognized through:
◾Fellowship program for the next generation of art and history scholars
◾Discover Database, which makes American artists of Ukrainian descent visible to academics and the public
◾Community events that bring people together through art and culture
◾Public programs that educate about how artists of Ukrainian descent have shaped American art history

📸The photos you see were taken during the exhibition visit in April 2026 as part of the Fellowship program, featuring Anastasia Gudko (BoA Founder), Mila Antkevych (Spring 2026 Fellow), and Natalia Revko (Spring 2025 Fellow).

💭Every fellowship research project goes beyond the 12 weeks. During the assigned time, the main focus and resources are defined 🤹‍♂️, and, yes, the paper is submitted. Still, the relationships 🧩and the work that follow, in preparation for the public presentation and publication, usually take months.

🎯Join us on June 12 to celebrate the culmination of the amazing research "Poetics of Displacement: Maya Deren Through a Ukrainian Lens."

We are excited to introduce you to Daria Dorosh, PhD, an interdisciplinary artist and one of the speakers at the upcoming panel discussion on Maya Deren, taking place on June 12.

This event marks the culmination of the Ukrainian-American Research Fellowship program:
◽Meet the fellow researcher Lily Selthofner
◽Hear directly from the artists
◽Witness the premiere of the publication “Poetics of Displacement: Reframing Maya Deren’s Filmography through a Ukrainian Lens.”

Daria Dorosh invited the Borshch of Art fellow and founder to her home and studio upstate for an interview and to share her vision of Maya Deren’s legacy. At the same time, she offered the priceless opportunity to see her works spanning decades of her practice—a truly memorable visit. You would be very lucky to hear Dorosh in person at the panel.

🎯Join us on Friday, June 12, from 6 to 8 pm, to learn about Maya Deren (1917–1961), a Kyiv-born Jewish American artist, film theorist, and choreographer who was one of the most significant figures in the history of experimental film.

🎈Share this event with art professionals (curators, art historians, archivists, writers, etc.) who may be interested in Maya Deren and contemporary American artists of Ukrainian origin.

Last week, we gathered in the beautiful and welcoming space of the Isabel Sullivan Gallery to reflect on what the years since the russian full-scale invasion have brought us, to our lives, homes, and art practices.

We are grateful to the American Ukraine Committee for inviting us to see the exhibition 'Through Her Eyes', which is so timely and provides us with context.

Shout-out to the artists who came to share their ideas and projects and generously invited participants to collaborate. It was even better than we envisioned. .levchenko.sculpture .kehoe Mila Antkevych Michael Levchenko Sculpture

After the horrific events of this weekend in Ukraine, it is hard to find the words that can help us all process the damage that was caused to human lives, homes, places of work, and cultural institutions.

The event we created with unity and community in mind became even more relevant. We invite you to come, share, brainstorm, exchange ideas, and, in some ways, heal through voicing.

Please join us on Wednesday night at Isabell Sullivan Gallery from 6 to 8. RSVP https://borshchofart.org/programs/public-programs/anastasia-gudko-20260527

On Wednesday, June 10, Borshch of Art hosts a compelling art panel featuring Daria Dorosh, Slinko, and Katya Grokhovsky. The artists will examine their creative practices in relation to Maya Deren’s enduring influence. This event marks the culmination of the fellowship program and will be led by Spring 2025 Ukrainian-American Art Research Fellow Lily Margaret Selthofner.

Selthofner’s research highlights the contemporary relevance of Maya Deren’s legacy through interviews with contemporary Ukrainian-American artists. By engaging Deren in conversation with practitioners across performance, sound, textiles, and film, Lily explores how these women transform experiences of displacement and geopolitical instability into groundbreaking art.
