Late-spring Open Studios & Workshops in the Elizabeth Catlett Art Space & Printmaking Studio

In these last days of Spring, the Elizabeth Catlett Art Space & Printmaking Studio is opening its doors for a new round of workshops and open studios - join us!

The art space is a place to develop art practice rooted in the understanding that culture and artistic work are not separate from the struggle for a better world, but deeply woven into it. Many of us just wrapped up The Artist Must Take Sides course, which asked us to think seriously about what it means to make art with intention and commitment to the movement. Now it’s time to bring those conversations into the studio. Whether you’re a seasoned printmaker or just starting out, come through to learn & practice new techniques and skills and develop your practice!

The People’s Forum is honored to be in attendance to Carry It On: A Celebration of the Life and Legacy of Assata Shakur — today, Saturday, May 30th, 2026.

Together, thousands of people commemorated the revolutionary life of Assata Shakur at Riverside Church in NYC. The speakers and performers celebrated Assata’s love of life and her fierce dedication to the struggle for liberation. They expressed gratitude to the Cuban people and its revolution for ensuring Assata’s freedom and safety and demanded an end to the U.S. government’s aggression on the island.

Assata’s life and legacy stands as a call to action. A recognition that there is no liberation without struggle, no freedom without political conviction and a fierce clarity of the horrors of capitalism and imperialism. Assata’s life is a testament to revolutionary strength and deep commitment for the struggle for Black liberation and the liberation of all oppressed people everywhere. We are called to carry on her legacy!

Last night, we closed out The Artist Must Take Sides: Culture & The Movement Past, Present & Future with our final Artist Salon: Taking Sides • Art in Action. Moderated by Rachel Domond and featuring Cleo Reed, Chris Meyers, and Carsie Blanton, the salon was a powerful conversation on the responsibility of artists in times of crisis and struggle. The evening brought together artists, organizers, educators, and community members committed to building a living culture rooted in solidarity, political commitment, and collective struggle.

Across the discussion, speakers reflected on the urgency of art that confronts empire, exploitation, and the billionaire agenda while envisioning and developing a new and better world. Together, in group discussions we explored the role of culture in movement-building, the relationship between art and political education, and what it means for artists to truly take sides in the fight for liberation.

Thank you to everyone who joined us in-person and virtually throughout this entire series, and to .fm for closing out the course with a vibrant final performance. We know that the conversation doesn’t end here — the work of building culture in service of people’s movements continues.

Tonight’s Artists in Formation: The Road Ahead session of The Artists Must Take Sides with Tahia Islam and Hannah Priscilla Craig traced the history of artists organizing collectively — from the John Reed Clubs and labor campaigns to Artists United Against Apartheid — showing how cultural workers built power alongside broader movements for civil rights, labor, anti-colonial struggle, and liberation.

We reflected on how these struggles were always local, national, and international all at once. From the strike pageants and mass cultural actions organized through the Industrial Workers of the World to the internationalist work of figures like Claudia Jones and Malcolm X, culture became a tool for political education, solidarity, and collective struggle, linking movements from Harlem to the Caribbean, Africa, and beyond.

The discussion returned to the present: what kinds of organizations, collectives, and political commitments artists need today to build a culture of resistance equal to the struggles ahead.

🇨🇺 No War On Cuba: Stop The Trump Administration’s Military Threats On Cuba

Trump wants to start another unprovoked war. This time against Cuba. We must stop it before it starts.

The Trump Administration’s escalating threats of military aggression against Cuba come on top of over six decades of U.S. sanctions and blockade, which have strangled the island’s economy, and recent measures, including a fuel blockade over the past four months, that have pushed Cubans to a new breaking point. Trump is forcing millions of Cubans to endure endless blackouts, shortages of food and basic necessities, and growing uncertainty as U.S. threats intensify.

The U.S. government claims that “Cuba is a threat to U.S. national security,” yet these claims are part of a familiar pattern used throughout history to justify aggression and endless wars abroad. Cuba is not preparing attacks against the United States, nor does it possess the capacity to threaten U.S. security. What Cuba represents is an independent nation asserting its right to self-determination despite decades of economic punishment and political pressure.

Countless voices throughout the United States and the world have rejected Trump’s war threats against Cuba. The Cuban people have the right to live in peace!

End The Blockade, No War On Cuba, Let Cuba Live!

Tomorrow is our next class in the series The Artist Must Take Sides: Culture & The Movement Past, Present & Future - it’s not too late to sign up! Join now at peoplesforum.org/takesides.

This 5th session in the series with Tahia Islam & Hannah Priscilla Craig will look at the rich history of artists organizing collectively, from the John Reed Clubs & unionization campaigns to Artists United Against Apartheid, and other organized internationalist projects, tracing how cultural workers have built power not as isolated individuals, but as a movement. Drawing on these models, we will turn to the question of the needs for the movements of artists today: the organizations, collectives, and strength required to meet this political moment and forge a culture of resistance equal to the struggle ahead.

Tomorrow’s class will open with a special performance from the

05/15/2026

Let Cuba Live! As Trump escalates his threats of takeover of Cuba, the U.S. government maintains its 60+ year blockade — now compounded by a months-long oil blockade — causing widespread and devastating hardship for ordinary Cubans. The U.S. government continues to starve the Cuban people of the resources they need to survive, and Trump, Rubio, and the entire administration openly threaten the island with military invasion.

The Trump administration continues to justify its sanctions, blockades, and threats of military action by claiming that “Cuba is a threat to U.S. national security.” This is a lie straight from the U.S. government’s well-worn playbook for war and invasion: manufacture an imminent threat to justify an attack. We have seen this same script used to pave the way for illegal and catastrophic U.S. military interventions time and time again. Cuba poses no threat to U.S. national security. This small island nation, whose only offense is charting an independent path and refusing to bow to imperialist threats, has no army positioned on U.S. borders, no weapons aimed at American cities, and no interest in threatening anyone. What Cuba has is sovereignty, and that is precisely what the U.S. government cannot tolerate.

Meanwhile, conditions on the island grow increasingly challenging. The U.S. fuel blockade means no power for essential infrastructure—schools operate without light, hospitals struggle to function, and people’s ability to move freely across the island is severely constrained. The Cuban people are resisting, having spent decades finding ways to survive under the crushing weight of the U.S. blockade, but these intensifying fuel shortages place unbearable pressure on an already strained island.

We demand an immediate end to the blockade, and all threats of military aggression against Cuba. The Cuban people have the right to determine their own future—free from coercion, free from starvation, and free from the threat of war. Hands off Cuba. STOP THE BLOCKADE!
