Chapman 50 Year Club: those of us in gold stoles were ‘72 grads inducted today. It was fun to see friends from 50 years ago and learn what they’ve been up to. We had a great tour of a transformed campus and enjoyed telling our host stories of our days on campus, including secret locations like the ledge at the top of a building we climbed up to and sat on that had a view of the nightly fireworks at Disneyland. Of course other things happened that weren’t just watching fireworks. Chapman’s dance program is rated #1 in the nation, and the film school is #4. When I attended there were about 1200 students. Now it’s something like 9000, if I remember right.

"The personal and the pastoral, then, both inform Ms. Brock’s work. She writes about her father in her recent book “Soul Repair: Recovering from Moral Injury after War.” Her co-author, Gabriella Lettini, is a theologian whose extended family includes veterans emotionally damaged by wartime experience."

The Rev. Rita Nakashima Brock has sought theological answers to a condition called “moral injury.”

U.S Marine Lu Lobello watched Iraqi insurgents in Baghdad ambush his unit and shoot his radio operator in the head. During the battle, Marines killed twenty innocent civilians.

A member of his troop screamed, "We shot a baby. We shot a baby."

Lobello is one of thousands of military veterans who wrestle with the psychological wounds of war. During a panel discussion at Newsweek & The Daily Beast's Hero Summit on Thursday, William Nash, a combat therapist who served in Iraq, told the audience that the stress soldiers experience stems from what they feel is a failure to live up to deeply held values, to bring back fellow injured soldiers, and to cope with survivor’s guilt.

Failure to bring back wounded soldiers and survivor’s guilt haunt our veterans for the rests of their lives. Coping, they say, starts with talking.

Launch of the Soul Repair Center

November 13, 2012 — Rev. Herman Keizer, former director of the Christian Reformed Church’s Chaplaincy and Care Ministry, was in Fort Worth, Texas on Veteran’s Day this week to help launch the Soul Repair Center at Brite Divinity School.

11/12/2012

This Veteran's Day, let's honor veterans and all people affected by war by striving to understand and address moral injury and the ever-lingering and far reaching consequences of war. The process of healing cannot start unless we can engage what truly ails us.
