The Alliance of Families for Justice

The Alliance of Families for Justice Alliance of Families for Justice | We support, empower, & mobilize families of the incarcerated. Join us! An empowered community is a healthy community!

At the Alliance of Families for Justice ("AFJ") we are paving the way for civic engagement of families of incarcerated people and their loved ones. By providing them with access to supportive services, training and information, AFJ mobilizes and empowers this distinctly marginalized group of people. Thus, they cease being overlooked and their important voice in the public discourse about mass inca

rceration and the welfare of their loved ones is heard.

It is a privilege and an honor to lead the Alliance of Famlies of Justice and to work with such dedicated and talented staff and board members. We are excited about this new venture and its enormous potential for long-lasting change. Our team of activists, advocates and staff bring years of direct experience in challenging the unjust practices of the NY State prison, criminal and juvenile justice systems. The Alliance of Familes for Justice is rebuilding and healing communities with strategic love, know how and dedication. In service,

Soffiyah Elijah
Executive Director

In July, our Central New York office, with the support of our dedicated Friends of AFJ, hosted a beautiful pop-up sale event.

Together, we raised money from pottery and clothing sales—all of which will go toward purchasing items for the Welcome Packages we give to people returning home from prison and jail.

We’re also grateful to everyone who helped with setup and selling on Friday and Saturday—your support made this event possible. A big thank you as well to all the local artists who generously donated their work to the sale.

With heavy hearts, we share that Attica Brother and survivor Tyrone Larkins has joined the ancestors. Tyrone was a truth-teller. A powerful speaker. A man who never stopped fighting for people behind the walls. He spent his life making sure the story of Attica wasn’t buried, that the voices of those who rose up were heard, respected, and remembered.

Rest in power, Tyrone.

Prison labor is usually mandatory and often unpaid. This May Day, we’re thinking of the incarcerated workers who are exploited every single day to keep prisons running.

On March 29th, the Alliance of Families for Justice, with heartfelt thanks to our co-sponsor Homeward NYC, hosted a transformative Day of Healing retreat for families impacted by mass incarceration. 🌸

With over 60 attendees, including formerly incarcerated individuals, their loved ones, and children, this retreat centered care, connection, and collective healing. The day featured everything from smoothie-making and sound baths to one-on-one therapy, art therapy, massages, and acupuncture—each designed to slow down, breathe, and feel supported.

A huge thank you to Homeward NYC, the Harlem Wellness Center, FieldTrip for the delicious food, our volunteers, and to all who attended with love and openness.

💙 This retreat was shaped by our community’s vision and grounded in the power of shared lived experiences.
