An update:

Dear Sangha,

Many of you, like me, may be profoundly disoriented by the cancelling of our in- person sesshin. How disappointed many of us are! Immediately to the rescue, an Emergency Sangha Team formed and designed a powerful three-day sesshin with zazen, talks, interviews, and practice circles!

This will be a profoundly restorative retreat in the midst of these confusing times.

I hope you will join me and the Village Zendo Teachers for this retreat beginning with Ango Entry this Friday evening at 6pm and continuing until Monday evening, August 9.

Tuesday, August 10, kicks off our True-Expression Arts retreat that also can serve us to revitalize our energies.

Saturday August 14th, we will have our traditional Zazenkai with a talk by Yours Truly.

Sunday, August 15th we will celebrate Shuso Hossen with Willie Mukei Smith.

I can think of no better example of ‘turning what turns us’ as Dogen exhorts us than participating in this Instruction to the Cook Online Retreat. Let’s turn these times of disappointment and uncertainty into ‘turning the light inwards’ and discovering the wisdom and joy of ‘cooking the divine meal.’

Thank you all for sticking with us during this challenging time,

Bows,

Roshi

So excited that our annual year end retreat will go forward - virtually, naturally- but we will stop and sit from Dec 26 to Jan 1 and find our balance and energy for coming year. There will be lots of quiet sitting, dharma talks, interviews with teachers, small group discussion (“mondo”) and yes! We can do this from our homes zooming... join us!

Please join us in Village Zendo’s first "Virtual Summer Ango." Ango, translated as “peaceful dwelling”, is a time for each of us to turn the light inward and deepen our practice. Traditionally we go away on retreat for a month to do this, but this year we will hold it right here, in our homes, together and apart, on Zoom. At a time of so much crisis and transformation, it is so important for us all to nourish and cultivate this peaceful dwelling right in the midst of our lives.

This year we will be offering a diverse range of arts-themed workshops led by longtime sangha members along with two study workshops on our summer text, Gabyo — “Painting of a Rice Cake” — that will be led by Ryotan Roshi and Shinryu Sensei.

Alongside the arts workshops we will be offering zazen three times a day—mornings, afternoons, and evenings—as well as our People of Color Meditation group on the first two Saturday mornings, led by Willie Mukei Smith, Karly Rodriguez, and Sherri Jyakuen Posey.

To participate in the workshops, registration is required. All zazen periods are open to all free of charge, no registration needed. Interview with Village Zendo teachers will be available throughout the ango to those registered for workshops only.

Hope to see you there for some or all of it!

"Expressing Compassion Now," a reminder that all over and throughout the body are the many hands and eyes of compassion. An invitation to be alert to what erodes our compassion (greed, anger, ignorance), encouraging us to open our minds to external and internal ways of expressing compassion today, in the midst of this pandemic.

In her talk, "Expressing Compassion Now," Roshi reminds us that all over and throughout the body are the many hands and eyes of compassion. Inviting us to be...
