The Galway Men’s Social & Benevolent Association was founded in 1873 as a direct result of the visit to the United States of the great Dominican preacher Father Thomas Burke of Galway City. Tom Burke came to America in Feb. 1872 in answer to the compelling pleas of America’s Irish, led by his fellow Galway man, Patrick Ford who was the first President of the Galway Men’s Association. The morale and spirits of the Irish in New York and elsewhere were at a low point as a result of the virulent anti-Irish propaganda and lies spawned by British historian James Froude. Tom met several times with a loosely organized group of active Galway –born New Yorkers. He urged the group to organize formally, draft a constitution and by-laws, meet regularly and work together for the common good of the Irish in New York. His advice was heeded and shortly before he returned to Ireland in 1873 Father Tom Burke was installed as the Galway Men’s Association first Chaplain and declared the Association’s “founder” at the first general meeting of the new born organization. Tom Burke can be seen on the Galway Men’s Association banner. The Galway Men’s Association continues to be a strong organization. The name has been changed to The Galway Association to include the membership of women. Meetings take place on the 3rd Friday of every month (except for summer break May-Aug.) at the Liederkranz Club, 6 East 87th Street, NYC. Membership is $20 annually and is open to anyone that has a direct connection to Galway.

New York GAA extends our deepest and most sincere condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of John Kelly on his passing.

John was a proud Chairman of the New York Hurling Division and a valued member of New York Galway Club. He was deeply involved in the GAA throughout his life, holding many different positions and giving so much of his time, energy, and passion to the association.

John’s passion was New York GAA, where he was a central figure as a player, manager, selector, and benefactor. His dedication to the development and growth of the GAA in New York leaves a lasting legacy, and his contribution to our community will not be forgotten.

He was also a passionate, lifelong supporter of Galway GAA, and some of his happiest memories were made travelling to Croke Park, proudly cheering on Galway and sharing those special days with family and friends.

John was much more than a member of the GAA — he was a friend, a mentor, a supporter, and an important part of the New York GAA family. His presence, generosity, and love for the games will be deeply missed.

Our thoughts and prayers are with John’s family, friends, teammates, and the wider GAA community at this very difficult time.

Reposing will be held on Thursday, October 1st from 4:00–8:00 p.m. at Ballard-Durand Funeral Home, 2 Maple Avenue, White Plains, N.Y.

A Mass of Christian Burial will take place on Friday, October 2nd, at 9:30 a.m. at the Church of the Sacred Heart. Interment will follow at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, Valhalla, N.Y.
