On June 28th, S.T.A.R.R. Marked 55th Anniversary with Rally Demanding
City Honor Settlement for Transgender Shelters

On Friday, June 28th, 2024, Mariah Lopez and S.T.A.R.R. (Strategic Trans Alliance for Radical Reform) led a rally at Foley Square, commemorating the organization's 55th anniversary and demanding that New York City fulfill its 2021 legal settlement to construct four transgender and gender nonconforming shelters.

The rally served as a stark reminder of the City's failure to uphold its commitment to the transgender community. The 2021 settlement, stemming from the Mariah Lopez v. NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) lawsuit, had revealed the City's inadequate support for transgender individuals seeking safe shelter. Despite agreeing to establish specialized shelter units in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan, along with comprehensive staff training and non-discrimination policies, the City had yet to build any such facilities.

The event featured a powerful lineup of speakers, including Mariah Lopez, Executive Director of S.T.A.R.R., representatives from the Legal Aid Society, Carolyn Wolpert, a former New York City government attorney, and Shauna Brooks, a prominent S.T.A.R.R. NYC chapter member, Somayah Haskins and Tariq Mccorkle, Co-Directors Housing and Advocacy Project, S.T.A.R.R. NYC. Together, they called upon the City to honor its pledge and provide much-needed resources for the transgender community.

The rally also paid tribute to S.T.A.R.R.'s founders, Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera, who established the organization after the Stonewall Rebellion in 1969. Their legacy of advocacy and support for transgender individuals continues to inspire the fight for equality and justice.

FRIDAY: STARR Celebrates 55th Anniversary with Rally to Demand City Honor Settlement to Build Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Shelters

NEW YORK–At 11am on Friday, June 28th, Mariah Lopez and STARR (Strategic Trans Alliance for Radical Reform) will join activists, legal advocates, and at-risk trans New Yorkers to demand New York City honor a 2021 legal settlement to build four transgender and gender nonconforming shelters.

Mariah Lopez v. NYC Department of Homeless Services (DHS) brought damning evidence of NYC DHS’s failure to serve transgender people in safe shelters. Under the settlement in 2021, the City agreed to establish shelter units that serve and affirm trans, nonbinary, and gender nonconforming (TGNC) people in Brooklyn, the Bronx, Queens, and Manhattan; provide shelter staff (including contractors) training on the rights of TGNC people; require that shelter staff (including contractors) follow a non-discrimination policy; and strengthen the complaint investigation process when shelter residents allege anti-trans discrimination or harassment.

No such shelters have been built to date, leaving the City out of compliance with the settlement. The rally will call on the City to honor their commitment and celebrate STARR’s founding by Marsha P. Johnson and Sylvia Rivera after the historic June 28, 1969 Stonewall Rebellion.

“This is one of the most exciting speculative fictions I’ve encountered in years, using a unique dramaturgy to explore a q***r history that is quickly being erased.”
JEREMY O. HARRIS

BATHHOUSE.PPTX is an epic new play that follows Presenter, a q***r Latiné student, whose powerpoint presentation on the history of cleanliness and bathing quickly starts to burst at the seams with appearances from the ghosts of a bathhouse at the end of the world, A Conquistador! Wearing One of Those Hats!, A Very Real T***k, and even Laura Linney. Valles describes it as, “a group project for perverts. Somewhere between lecture, re-enactment, and cruising ground. A meditation on q***r longing, q***r grief, and all our q***r worlds that will come to pass, that will come to be.”
