One of the biggest composting misconceptions is that you can simply toss food scraps into a bin and walk away. Healthy compost relies on a balance of “greens” (nitrogen-rich materials) and “browns” (carbon-rich materials).

A simple way to tell the difference:
🍃Greens are usually fresh, colorful, and contain moisture.
🍂 Browns are usually dry, dead, paper-y, or woody.

Think of it this way:
Greens = fuel for microbes
Browns = structure and balance
Our goal is roughly twice as many browns as greens. Too many greens? Compost gets wet and smelly. Too many browns? Compost breaks down slowly.

Our compost system works best when those materials are balanced, typically around 2 parts browns to 1 part greens. Still not sure if something belongs in the compost? When in doubt, keep it out and ask one of our members.

Not everything belongs in our garden compost system. And not every compost system is the same! Certain products are more difficult to break-down and rely on an industrial compost system to decompose. It’s important to know what can and can’t be composted at Java Street.

A good rule of thumb to follow is: “If it’s edible or came from something that grew in the ground, it can probably be composted.” But there’s always some exceptions to keep in mind:

YES
• Fruit & vegetable scraps
• Coffee grounds
• Tea bags
• Leaves
• Grass clippings
• Food-soiled paper
• Paper drinkware
• Dead plants (without seeds)

NO
• Meat *attracts rodents!
• Dairy *attracts rodents!
• Bones
• Weeds
• Plants with seeds
• Glossy or laminated paper
• Compostable plastic cups & utensils

When in doubt, ask a garden member before tossing it in.

Composting can be intimidating, but with proper knowledge on how we compost at Java St., you’ll find that it’s both simple and rewarding. Understanding how to compost starts with understanding the systems we have set in place. We use a 3-bin compost system:

Bin 1 → Fresh material is added
Bin 2 → Material continues breaking down
Bin 3 → Compost matures and cures

Throughout the process, we:
🌡️ Monitor temperature
💨 Add air by mixing
💧 Check moisture
⚖️ Balance greens and browns

Composting is a team effort and every food scrap diverted from the landfill helps. Thanks to everyone who contributes!

Did you know that NYC produces ~26M tons of garbage annually, residentially & commercially? We can do our part to reduce that number by composting in our garden. Something you may not know is that food scraps and yard waste actually don’t belong in the trash. When organic waste ends up in landfills, it produces methane, a powerful greenhouse gas. When it gets composted instead, it becomes a nutrient-rich soil amendment that helps plants thrive.

Why should you get involved in composting?
♻️ Reduces the amount of landfill waste
🌎 Lowers greenhouse gas emissions
💧 Uses fewer resources than many waste-processing systems
🌱 Creates nutrients that help build healthier soil

Follow along this month as we share how we composting tips, myths, and behind-the-scenes looks at our compost system works at Java Street garden.
