Our Vision
A socially just world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. Our Mission
Advocate for people with intellectual, developmental, and other disabilities to lead full and equitable lives. Equity for People with Disabilities
We’re fiercely committed to achieving equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities in New York City. At AHRC New York Ci

ty we support more than 15,000 people annually under our guiding principle of equity for people with disabilities. We uphold the highest standards in supporting people to lead full and equitable lives and are part of a social justice movement grounded in our common humanity. Our 5,000 staff are devoted to the highest levels of excellence and innovation in all aspects of their work to actively create a world where the power of difference is embraced, valued and celebrated. We’re meeting our objectives by not only providing supports to people with intellectual & developmental disabilities and their families, but by also calling for change in legislation and public policy, and advocating for better education, living arrangements, prospects for work and fuller lives in the community. We’re an over 75-year-old family governed organization, among the very best champions for people with disabilities in New York City and beyond. The number of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities is great as are the inequities they face in a world that still perpetuates an “us and them” mentality. Now more than ever, we call upon government, corporations, foundations and the public to join us so we can effectively advocate and achieve equity for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Last week, AHRC NYC participated in the Salesforce World Tour Nonprofit Reception.

AHRC NYC Office Assistants staffed a table, assisted with guest check-in, and spoke with attendees about their roles at Salesforce. Shauna Lozada, who launched the AHRC NYC x Salesforce partnership in 2017, spoke about the work of AHRC NYC.

Events like this provide an opportunity to share the importance of partnerships like this and the people behind them.

October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM).

Now in its 80th year, NDEAM is a reminder of a simple truth: people with disabilities belong in every workplace.

Yet barriers persist. In 2024, only 22.7% of people with disabilities were employed compared to 65.5% of those without disabilities. Employment rates are even lower for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

Inclusion isn’t charity or a checkbox. It’s good business. Companies that hire people with disabilities build stronger teams, improve retention, and achieve better results.

This year’s theme, “Celebrating Value and Talent,” calls on all of us to recognize ability, remove barriers, and create real access to work.

Jeffrey, who works at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, recently earned his certification from Research Ethics for All, which will allow him to work on research projects that involve human subjects. These types of jobs might include tasks like inter-departmental transportation of specimens or clerical work that includes protected private health information.

With support from The Consortium for Customized Employment (CCE) and AHRC NYC EBS, Jeffrey became the first person at Columbia to complete this certification. This curriculum, created by and for people with developmental disabilities, widens the pool of people who can meet the strict certification standards and do this valuable work.

We are excited for Jeffrey’s future, and what he will be able to contribute to Columbia’s research!
