This Memorial Day, let us take a moment to remember and thank those who made the ultimate sacrifice. Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord.

On May 5, a fast-moving fire on Dyckman Street in Inwood, Manhattan claimed lives, displaced more than 100 residents, and left families facing sudden loss and uncertainty. Within hours, Catholic Charities of New York responded on the ground alongside emergency responders and city agencies. We coordinated with partners including the American Red Cross and city agencies to provide emergency shelter and connect families to critical resources.

Parish partners stepped forward, opening their doors for residents and volunteers, including Our Lady of Mount Carmel, where our staff and parish partners provided food, clothing, and ongoing case management support, just as they did weeks prior when a fire broke out in Belmont.

In the days that followed, we continued accompanying families through housing navigation, document replacement, and mental health support. We remain committed to walking with families through crisis and into stability.

The mission continues. This was a big week of accomplishments for our federation of agencies. Our staff joined many other community-based organizations at City Hall at the rally for . Our Catholic values are clear: all workers have the right to decent and fair wages, to organize, and to dignity. Fair contracts and cost-of-living adjustments are essential for our human services workers.

Earlier this week, Beacon of Hope, one of our divisions specializing in supportive housing for people struggling with severe mental illness, opened up a new space at 1733 Eastchester Road in the Bronx. This location will support three residences, totaling 336 beds, where people going through life’s most difficult challenges, many of them formerly unhoused, will walk the road to recovery through a continuum of services.

Meanwhile, our partners at Droste Mental Health Services held a celebration of their recent interns and volunteers. These scholars, recent graduates, and professionals worked to welcome 100 new patients and provided 400 hours of therapy to individuals facing depression, anxiety, trauma, addiction, and more, all at deeply affordable, sliding-scale prices.

In 2023, a fire in Nadica’s apartment upended her life. She lost pretty much everything. Rebuilding meant finding temporary housing, replacing essentials, and navigating the uncertainty that follows a sudden crisis. She turned to Catholic Charities’ Lt. Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. Memorial Community Center in Central Harlem for support.

As a child and teenager, she had been in foster care through Catholic Guardian Services, a Catholic Charities of New York independent affiliated agency also located at the Kennedy Center. Walking back into the same building as a mother was, in her words, “a full circle moment.” Now, she's redefining strength through motherhood.

“I think having this in the community is really important. I hope my story encourages more people, especially those my age who might feel embarrassed, to come here and seek help,” said Nadica.

Nadica, we see you, and we are proud of what you've done.

On Monday, Catholic Charities of New York held our 40th Annual Archbishop’s Open at Winged Foot Golf Club. The event sold out, raising a record-breaking $1.3 million. Special thanks to our presenting sponsor, KPMG, event co-chairs Jim Donaghy and Sean Egan, our Golf Committee, and all who contributed to making this milestone event a success.

We were grateful to have His Excellency Archbishop Ronald Hicks in attendance for his first namesake golf open. “People are putting their faith into action and making a real difference by participating in this event,” he stated.

“More funds means we will feed more families that are hungry,” he added. “It means that we will have more safe and stable housing for those who are homeless. It means that we will have more after-school programs, mentoring, and education support to keep kids off the streets. With Catholic Charities, we will be helping more people in their most vulnerable moments.”

Thanks again to all who participated. We look forward to welcoming you back next May!

Happy Mother's Day! 🌸 This week, we hosted a heartfelt Mother’s Day Boutique at the Cardinal Spellman Center in Lower East Side Manhattan, providing expecting and new mothers with diapers, nursing blankets, baby bottles, postpartum kits, onesies, and more.

Over 30 mothers attended, receiving support, resources, refreshments, and a warm, welcoming space to feel seen, appreciated, and connected.

Catholic Charities of New York continues to build a network of care, connection, and encouragement for families year-round, honoring the strength, love, and dedication that mothers demonstrate every day.

A special thank you to volunteers from Cristo Rey New York High School for joining us, bringing help and hope to these families.

To the mothers in our community — including our clients, staff, volunteers, and supporters — we celebrate you today and every day.

Our Day Laborer’s Program in Yonkers had a blast at Volunteer Appreciation Day last week! The event was filled with connection, laughter, creativity, and gratitude, all while honoring the heart and dedication they bring to our community.

Volunteers enjoyed a meal catered by Olive Garden, music, and conversation. The event included a painting workshop, with each volunteer creating a unique version of a design chosen by the group. Many arrived early to help with setup and stayed afterward to assist with cleanup, showing the care and commitment they bring to everything they do.

We are so grateful for each and every volunteer, and the energy, compassion, and dedication they bring to our programs. Here’s to celebrating together, today and every day. 💛

Last week, at Alianza Dominicana Cultural Center in Washington Heights, we celebrated the opening of Latinidad Library (Biblioteca Latinidad), a plush new literacy hub offering a wide selection of works by Latino and Afro-Latino authors, Spanish-language titles, and culturally sustaining stories for youth of all ages and their families.

We were joined by middle school students and educators from Eleanor Roosevelt I.S. 143M who perused and enjoyed the titles, ranging from picture books to graphic novels to high-level fiction and non-fiction works. We were joined by some of the community’s luminary writers and poets, who spoke to the students about how literacy opens up horizons and possibilities in life.

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the event, the United Way of New York City for generously sponsoring this space, and to the NYC Department of Youth and Community Development and the New York State Council on the Arts for partnering with us.
