New 42 and the New Victory Theater mourn the loss of our dear colleague Laura Been, who passed away in August.

Both personally and professionally, Laura Been was an integral and beloved member of the NYC and national theater community, most especially in the field of Theater for Young Audiences. She worked at New 42 for 13 years, where she developed new works and championed many NYC artists in the New Victory LabWorks program and beyond. Laura is greatly missed by her friends and colleagues. She lives on in daughter Ruby and in the work of the many artists she supported.

This Deaf Awareness Month, we’re celebrating our friend Candace “Candy” Broecker, co-founder of Hands On Sign Interpreted Performances, Inc!

You can learn more about sign language interpretation for theater by checking out SIGN LANGUAGE INTERPRETING FOR THEATRE: A COLLABORATIVE APPROACH, written by Candy, along with collaborators Lynnette Taylor and Stephanie Feyne, who have interpreted countless New Victory shows throughout our history!

We’ve provided sign language interpretation in partnership with Hands On for every New Victory performance since we opened our doors in 1995. We couldn’t ask for a better partner!

The authors are pictured in the first photo with Alonso Rivera, who you may have also seen interpreting shows at the New Victory!
