Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing

Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing IAHH is a coalition of religious organizations and individuals working with and on behalf of homeless, poorly housed, and at-risk individuals.

The Assembly addresses homelessness in two ways: helping those who are homeless recover from the trauma associated with their homelessness and begin to rebuild their lives - through our Life-Skills Empowerment programs; and by working with our broad base of coalition partners in supporting the establishment of public policies that will provide needed services to those who are homeless or at risk o

f homelessness and supporting policies that will produce and preserve housing affordable to homeless and low income New Yorkers.

On Friday, the 12th of June, our one and only Executive Director Marc Greenberg turns 75. It was 40 years ago that he co-founded the Interfaith Assembly on Homelessness and Housing, initially based at the Cathedral of St. John the Divine. Marc has dedicated more than half of his life advocating for everyone's right to housing. On behalf of the people he has touched throughout the years, the people he worked for and with, we wish Marc a
very happy birthday and we thank him for all the years of dedication and service. We look forward to more years of engagement with the City's homeless population, to influencing public policy and programs on their behalf, and continuing to do good with love.

The Assembly is seeking donations to celebrate Marc's 75th birthday. Please consider supporting our work.

We have been doing our Street Homeless Advocacy Program (SHAP) outreach every Thursday, from 7 pm to 9 pm in front of 144 West 32nd St. for almost four years now. Every Thursday, our lives are enriched by the people we meet, from partners to volunteers to our street homeless clients. It is such a privilege to see the positive changes that happen to everyone, especially our homeless friends. Indeed, having a quiet place to lay your head, to sleep, a place clean and secure - and even if you have not yet decided to find a place indoors - just finding a community where you feel safe and accepted, is a right every one of us should have.

After every outreach, Marc and I would talk about how it seems like we have formed a community in our little Thursday get together because even if most of them are already placed in safe havens or in transitional housing waiting to be permanently housed, they still return to 32nd to 'break bread' and just be present.

Marc and I are humbled to receive this card from one of the people we met during our outreach.

"You are a true vessel of "God" and having you and Mark around truly is comforting to say the least...for you and your husband are "light" to the world's "darkness". I'm "blessed" to know you both. I truly appreciate all that you guys are and all you aim to be! Continue to be great and do (God) work! For both are "Angels" sent by "God"...Thank you! You are a true blessing to me and humanity!"

Because we are the face of the outreach, we are named in the card. But this goes to all the people who make our 32nd Thursday outreach happen. To our food providers - The Sikhs, The Sadhu Vaswani Center, The Nur Ashki Jerrahi Community and all who share something of themselves to our brothers and sisters living in the streets, this is as much for you.

Our executive director is highlighted this week in New York City's national volunteer week.

Here is the description was submitted on his behalf along with some pictures of our program.
------------

Marc leads the West-Midtown site of the Street Homeless Advocacy Program (SHAP), - one of 7 sites of a volunteer effort addressing the crisis of unsheltered homelessness in Manhattan which has worked with the NYC department of Homeless Services to refer over 1,100 people from the street to low barrier shelters over the past nearly 4 years.

Each week, he coordinates a rotating network of faith communities to serve meals at the West 32nd street site. Beyond that, Marc shows up every Thursday with clothing, food, and other essentials—often covering the cost himself to make sure no one is turned away without help.

Over time, his consistency and that of his inspired and committed team have helped hundreds of individuals move off the street and into shelter. He builds real relationships with the people he meets, remembering their names, their stories, and where they are in their journey, then following through.

Watching Marc in action teaches volunteers something deeper: that meaningful outreach goes beyond transactions. It’s about trust, dignity, and walking alongside people every step of the way.

We wish to extend our sincerest appreciation and profound gratitude to Larry Wood, our esteemed partner, fellow advocate, collaborator, mentor, and friend, for his unwavering dedication as a fervent champion of the marginalized, oppressed, and disenfranchised. Though we refer to this milestone as retirement, we are confident that Larry will remain actively engaged, his presence enduring among us, until his counsel is no longer required.
