Safe Water Network

Safe Water Network Water is a human right. And yet, 2 billion people do not have access to safely managed water.

We are working to solve the global water crisis through innovation and collective action. We reach millions in underserved communities by developing affordable, equitable solutions and accelerate access by providing technical assistance and catalyzing sector-wide collaboration. Since its founding, Safe Water Network has worked to overcome the challenges faced by communities in developing economies

with restricted access to safe water. Preliminary research identified critical gaps in service delivery: unreliable operations, financial unsustainability, poor quality water, and inequitable access. Our innovative original idea was to restore agency to communities through access to safe water, education, and capacity building. We believe deeply in the potential of communities to sustainably manage their own safe water systems. We chose to begin our field implementation work in Ghana and India because of the enabling environments in both countries, including an openness to foreign investment, stable democracy and civil society, and a common language base. Starting and growing this work was possible through strong in-country teams of experts collaborating with a network of public and private partners. Through Field Implementation, Technical Assistance, and Sector Engagement, Safe Water Network is committed to providing the resources and practices that ensure millions of people in Ghana, India and globally have access to safe water.

When Safe Water Network India Advisory Council Member Hew Crooks visited our field operations in Solapur, Maharashtra last month, he didn't just observe the work. He got on a Royal Enfield and rode out to see it.

In Karmala Block, SWN works with communities and farmers to restore water security through pond rejuvenation, contour trenching, tree planting, drip irrigation, and water-saving agriculture. For 4,950 farmers across six villages, the results are real: wells that ran dry by November now hold water through March, a five-year first.

That's the pond behind him in this photo. That water wasn't there before. We're grateful for Hew's continued partnership and for advisors who show up in the field.

Earlier this month, Safe Water Network India Advisory Council Member Sanjeev Chadha visited our India office for a team review.

Sanjeev and his wife Radha have been generous partners for more than five years, donating two iJal water stations in Telangana and visiting our field operations across India and Ghana. As the former PepsiCo Chairman and CEO for Asia Pacific, the Middle East, and North Africa, Sanjeev led the company to achieve positive water balance in India, a global first. His passion for water access is something we see in everything he does.

We are grateful for his friendship, his generosity, and his commitment to the communities we serve.

As concern grows in Ghana over the impact of galamsey on water sources, one point is worth clarifying: galamsey is illegal small-scale gold mining, not a contaminant itself.

The water risk comes from the damage illegal mining can do to the environment, including sediment and toxic substances associated with gold extraction.

For Safe Water Network, the key point is straightforward. We do not source water from polluted surface rivers affected by galamsey. In Ghana, our stations primarily rely on groundwater from boreholes, with source validation carried out before a source is introduced. If a source does not meet requirements, it is not used.

Clarity matters. Safe water starts with safe sourcing.

Safe Water Network (SWN) Ghana has issued a public assurance that water dispensed through its treatment stations across the country remains uncontaminated, even as illegal mining continues to degrade Ghana's major river systems and push the national water quality index to new lows. Clean water changes everything.

Through its ongoing CSR commitment, DuPont Water Solutions India—working with Safe Water Network India—is helping bring safe drinking water to about 4,000 students at government schools in Gurugram and Hyderabad.

For these students, it means better health, better focus in the classroom, and one less daily worry. It also means learning habits around hygiene and safe water that can last a lifetime.

Grateful for DuPont India’s continued partnership in making this possible.
