We are deeply saddened by the recent passing of Danny Mixon, a true giant in the world of jazz. On behalf of our entire community, we extend our heartfelt condolences to his family during this difficult time. Danny Mixon's extraordinary talent and masterful orchestration graced our Festivals and Open Mics. It was a privilege to hear his music. While we mourn his loss, we take comfort in the lasting joy and memories his performances have given us. His legacy will continue to inspire and resonate within our musical gatherings for years to come.
Sincerely,
Jacqueline Lennon, President

CELEBRATING COBI NARITA'S 100TH BIRTHDAY
On March 17, 2026, a heartfelt celebration took place at Saint Peter’s Church in midtown New York City, also known as the Jazz Church, in honor of Cobi Narita’s 100th Heavenly Birthday. The event was held during Women’s History Month and was dedicated to acknowledging Cobi’s remarkable achievements throughout her life.
The celebration was hosted by Cobi’s daughter, Susan Zelenay Narita, who brought together numerous musicians and friends. Attendees shared testimonies and performed music, each offering tribute to Cobi’s enduring influence in the jazz community.
In 1994, Cobi, along with other notable women in jazz, founded the International Women in Jazz (IWJ), establishing its headquarters at Saint Peter’s Church. During the event, I was grateful to speak on behalf of IWJ, recognizing the many members, supporters, and friends who have continued Cobi’s mission, vision and legacy—working to meet the needs of female jazz musicians.
Special thanks to Carol Sudhalter, IWJ Honoree for 2025, for her exceptional performances on multiple instruments throughout the celebration and thanks to Susan Zelenay Narita for this spectacular event.
