This is Bernardine, one of our dedicated ward assistants at the Fistula Care Centre.

Here, she is sharing a warm moment with one of our patients, something she naturally does every day.

Whenever she has a little free time, Bernardine stops to talk, offer comfort, and check if our patients need anything. Her kindness and presence help make their stay more reassuring and compassionate.

At Freedom From Fistula Madagascar, our work goes far beyond treating obstetric fistula. We care for every woman as if she were part of our own family.

Huge thanks to our team in Madagascar for sharing IANY’S JOURNEY TO HEALING

For 10 years, she lived in silence and shame after a difficult labor that claimed her baby’s life and left her with a fistula. She withdrew from her community, losing hope little by little.

Everything changed when she met Marivelo, a patient ambassador who helped her reach the Fistula Care Center in Tamatave. Here, she received dignity, kindness, and exceptional care from Dr. Breen and the entire team.

✨ Today, she is healed.Her smile, her strength, and her pride have returned as she prepares to rejoin her community.

Her story reminds us that hope is real — and healing is possible

BLADDER RETRAINING AFTER SURGERY

For women with obstetric fistula, the normal sensation of needing to urinate is lost.

After surgery and once the urinary catheter is removed, they need to gradually retrain their ability to urinate on their own.

At the Fistula Care Center, we carefully measure the urine output to monitor clinical progress. This is a vital step toward full recovery and restored bladder function.

Our Aberdeen Women’s Centre in Sierra Leone specialises in treating injured child and adolescent survivors of sexual and gender based violence (SGBV).

In 2024 the team worked in partnership with the police, lawyers, advocacy groups and other partners to ensure the best care was available to the 210 survivors in our care. 33 of which were under the age of 10, 168 aged 11 - 17 and 9 over 18.

These are heartbreaking statistics and the violence must stop. 🛑

We are currently running a sewing workshop in Malawi. Each participant receives a brand-new sewing machine and a starter kit to help them set up their own micro-enterprise. This amazing income generation project is made possible through the support of UNFPA Malawi, under the Embassy of Iceland in Lilongwe programme for Nkhotakota District.

Freedom From Fistula Madagascar is currently taking part in the national coordination meeting bringing together all organizations involved in the fight against obstetric fistula in Madagascar.

The event, organized by the Ministry of Public Health, is ongoing in Mahajanga, having started yesterday, 19 November, and continuing until 21 November 2025.

Main objective: to establish joint strategies to eliminate obstetric fistula across the country.

We are proud to stand with all partners working to improve the lives of Malagasy women affected by this condition.

Today we mark World Children’s Day – 20 November.

Children everywhere are speaking up about their lives, their hopes and their rights.

At Freedom From Fistula, we help protect those rights by providing safe maternity care in Malawi and Sierra Leone. In Sierra Leone, we also offer free primary healthcare and immunizations for children aged 0–15, helping protect them from serious illnesses like malaria.

At our Aberdeen Women’s Centre, we support children and young people who have experienced sexual and gender-based violence.

Children matter.

Supported by the Aminata Maternal Foundation, 60 teenage mothers from our Dream Girls cohort were selected to attend our Skills Training Centre in 2024.

The program helps transform their lives through vocational training, including hairdressing and hospitality, to help them gain employment or start businesses, as well as builds their self-esteem and confidence.
