Women's health has long been underfunded, under-researched, and overlooked.

Melinda French Gates announced an additional $215 million investment through Pivotal to advance women's health globally. The funding includes a $40 million grant to Co-Impact to integrate mental health into maternal and primary care (particularly in Africa) and a $10 million grant to The Menopause Society to expand provider education and improve access to menopause care in the United States.

At the Seleni Institute, we see the impact of these gaps every day. Whether it's a new parent struggling with postpartum depression, a couple navigating infertility, or a woman seeking support through menopause, mental health remains an essential and frequently neglected part of healthcare.

Meaningful progress requires investment in research, provider education, accessible care, and evidence-based resources that support women throughout every stage of reproductive life. ๐Ÿ’™

We're encouraged to see women's health receiving the attention and funding it deserves and remain committed to ensuring that mental health is part of the conversation.

What happens when nearly 100 healthcare professionals come together to learn about Black Perinatal Mental Health?

๐Ÿ“ˆ 100% said they would recommend the program to others
๐Ÿ“ˆ 98% achieved the webinar's learning objectives
๐Ÿ“ˆ 95% reported enhanced professional expertise
๐Ÿ“ˆ Confidence in supporting Black birthing clients increased by 20%

Thank you to Dr. Solimar Santiago-Warner, the Partnership for Maternal and Child Health of Northern NJ, and the 98 professionals who joined us for this important conversation on advancing birth equity and improving maternal mental health outcomes.

Education is one of the most powerful tools we have to address disparities in care. We're grateful to be part of these critical conversations and look forward to continuing this work together. ๐Ÿ’™

Families come in many forms and every parent deserves support.

On Global Day of Parents, we recognize the emotional labor, identity shifts, and mental health challenges that can come with pregnancy, parenthood, fertility journeys, loss, and caregiving.

๐Ÿ’™ 1 in 5 women experience a maternal mental health condition during pregnancy or postpartum.
๐Ÿ’™ Untreated parental mental health conditions can impact the well-being of the entire family system.

We believe caring for parents is caring for families. Learn more about our mental health services & support by visiting seleni.org. ๐Ÿ”—

A new The New York Times opinion piece is reigniting an urgent conversation: why does support for mothers drop off so sharply after birth?

The article examines the major gaps in postpartum care in the U.S., where many women receive extensive prenatal care but little sustained support after delivery; despite the fact that postpartum complications can last months or even years.

โžก๏ธ There is a misconception that recovery ends at the six-week postpartum visit
โžก๏ธ Many mothers face long-term physical and mental health effects after birth
โžก๏ธ Persistent gaps in healthcare access, follow-up care, and support systems exist
โžก๏ธ We need to treat postpartum care as a critical part of maternal healthcare, not an afterthought

Research continues to show that the period is one of the most vulnerable times for maternal health. Yet many women are left navigating exhaustion, pain, mental health challenges, and major life transitions with minimal clinical or community support.

Postpartum care cannot stop once the baby arrives. Maternal wellbeing requires sustained care, early intervention, and systems that recognize recovery as a long-term process, not a six-week milestone. ๐Ÿ’™

We recently partnered with the Urban Perinatal Education Center in Rhode Island for our second in-person training together focused on Black maternal mental health and adolescent perinatal mental health.

Led by Dr. Solimar Santiago-Warner, Birth Trauma & Loss Therapist, educator, and member of the Seleni Institute's Clinical Advisory Board, the training:

๐Ÿ’™ Reminded us that the body carries what people live through: stress, trauma, grief, racism, inequity, survival, and resilience.
๐Ÿ’™ Invited us to reflect on the wisdom and responsibility many young parents carry as they navigate family, community, and systems of care.

Thank you to everyone who shared, listened, and helped make this in-person gathering possible. ๐Ÿซถ

Nitzia Logothetis, Co-Founder and Chair of the Board of the Seleni Institute, was honored with the Global Impact Award at the Hostos Community College Foundationโ€™s 2026 Scholarship Benefit on April 30.

Her message was clear: this work is urgent.

โ€ข 1 in 5 women experiences a perinatal mental health condition and 80% go untreated
โ€ข Black women are 3โ€“4x more likely to die from pregnancy-related causes than white women

These are not just statistics. They point to systemic gaps in care that continue to impact women and families every day.

As Nitzia shared, โ€œChange a motherโ€™s life, and you change a childโ€™s life.โ€ Investing in womenโ€™s mental health is an investment in the wellbeing of generations to come.

Thank you to the Hostos Community College Foundation for this recognition and for helping elevate conversations that too often go unheard. ๐Ÿ’™
