CHINATOWN SMALL BIZ PANEL⭐️ TALK TOO MUCH 2026

Chinatown is changing. There’s a lot of new investment and brands in the neighborhood. And every year, old mom-and-pop shops with decades of history and memories close down.

Even as the neighborhood evolves, there’s a group that’s thinking hard about Chinatown’s future. These legacy businesses and a new generation of operators are navigating changes to respect the past and move the community forward.

We’re bringing hot topic Chinatown convos that mostly happen online these days — gentrification, bad landlords, too many boba shops — to a real talk panel to unpack WHAT’S REALLY GOOD.

Lucas Sin is running Lok Kee 諾記 an experimental pop up at M Star, the oldest cha chaan teng in Chinatown. You might’ve seen him on YouTube, where he shares his love for Cantonese cuisine and food that inspires him.

Alice Liu is the community lead at THINK!CHINATOWN Alice and her family operate Grand Tea & Imports 好茶水 | 佛運玄 , supplying premium tea, cultural goods, and altars for holiday worshipping.

Fulton Hou has BEEN holding it down as a community lead at Send Chinatown Love and a mentor at Apex for Youth. Fulton and his family operate NY Firetech, which services many restaurants in Chinatown and across the city.

We LOVED seeing people come from all over New York, from complete beginners learning for the first time to longtime mahjong players who definitely knew what they were doing 😂 It was so nice having everyone at different ages and experience levels playing together, meeting new people, and just hanging out.

Johnson’s films, shot across the U.S., China, and Japan, include ONLY THE MOON STANDS STILL (Locarno, Tribeca, AFI FEST), LONELY BLUE NIGHT (AFI FEST, HBO APA Visionaries), IRON HANDS (Toronto, Tribeca), and A STORY OF DIVINE WIND (Beyond Fest). As a television director, he has directed episodes of AMERICAN BORN CHINESE (Disney+) and THE CHI (SHOWTIME). He is an alumnus of the Locarno Filmmakers Academy, the Film at Lincoln Center Artists Academy, and Film Independent Project Involve. Johnson earned an M.F.A. in Film from Columbia University and is a member of the DGA and Academy (AMPAS).

Ben’s best known for starring as Jin Wang in the Disney+ series AMERICAN BORN CHINESE and the feature films CHANG CAN DUNK and KARATE KID: LEGENDS. A graduate of New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, he is also a writer and director whose creative work spans both film and television. Fluent in Mandarin and trained in multiple martial arts, Wang has emerged as one of Hollywood’s rising young talents, recognized for bringing authenticity and depth to contemporary Asian American stories.

For our local NY Fuzhounese community looking for delicious eats this summer, check out Chenzi at Smorgasburg!

Chenzi was founded by fellow Fuzhounese who believe our food traditions deserve to be shared and celebrated. Their signature potato balls are inspired by a beloved comfort food from Changle, Fuzhou.

Chenzi will be at Smorgasburg this season through October 31:

Welcome back! The Flavors of Fujian Dinner returns ★

Following the success of last year’s sold-out dinner, we’re so thrilled to present another curated menu featuring recipes and stories from our ongoing cookbook project, Flavors of Fujian

For over a year, Jess (NYC-based food writer) and Allen (co-founder of Fuzhou America) have embarked on a deeply personal cultural project. After extensively traveling China and the US, and interviewing dozens of Fujianese — artisans with a mastery of street food, talented family home cooks, and an acclaimed chef so renowned for his elaborate banquets that he recently came out of retirement (!!) — they’re excited to answer questions and share their always evolving process.

Come to this dinner (one night only, two seatings) and hear about our experience conducting culinary research in Fuzhou, capturing New York’s Chinatowns in motion, and mingling with likeminded food writers in China. There will be storytelling, wok-fire cooking, and cups overflowing with Fujianese rice w**e. Menu dropping soon, so stay tuned!
