The world honored Dr. King with the Nobel Peace Prize, but he asked to be remembered simply as "a drum major for justice… for peace… for righteousness." That's the legacy our name carries, and the work we're committed to every day.

On Indigenous Peoples' Day, DMI honors the Native nations whose history, sovereignty, and contributions are woven into the story of this land. Justice and equity mean telling that story truthfully, and standing with Indigenous communities today.

On Freedom Day in 1963, the people of Selma showed what it costs to claim the right to vote. We honor them by protecting it.

I think about Selma’s Freedom Day often. Yesterday in 1963, hundreds of Black residents lined up outside the Dallas County Courthouse in Selma to register to vote. They stood for hours under threat of arrest and violence, while those who tried to bring them water were arrested. Sixty-three years later, the fight to make registering and voting accessible to everyone continues.

Peace is one of the three pillars of DMI's work, alongside justice and equity. On the International Day of Nonviolence, we recommit to Dr. King's belief that lasting change comes through courage, discipline, and love

Today is the International Day of Nonviolence. Nonviolence has shaped my whole life and it takes the strongest type of courage. It isn't passive acceptance. It's peaceful resistance.

A culture of nonviolence doesn't weaken the fight against injustice. It strengthens it. And our greatest nonviolent tool is the right to vote.
