Thank you to everyone who joined us to bring the magic of Barretstown to children living with serious illness here in the United States. Through our therapeutic recreation programs in Ireland, Barretstown helps children rebuild their confidence and rediscover the joy of being a child after the challenges of illness and treatment.

Each year, we welcome children from across the United States to camp at Barretstown in Ireland. With your support, we aim to double the number U.S. campers in the years ahead, giving even more families the chance to experience Barretstown’s life-changing programs.

A special thank you to Michael Dowling, our guest of honor, for his thoughtful and inspiring remarks. Thanks also to Gerald Angley, our new Consul General of Ireland in New York, for joining us.

Most of all thanks to the Barretstown Foundation Advisory Council, our sponsors and partners, and all of our supporters, who helped make the morning such a success!

Our Story

Barretstown is a specially-designed camp in County Kildare, Ireland, founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman. Barretstown is a proud member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network, a growing global community of independently managed and financed camps and programs. Established in 1994, with the generous donation of our 500 acre estate by the Irish Government, Barretstown was the first camp of its kind to be opened outside the USA and the third camp founded by Paul. Barretstown provides Therapeutic Recreation programs for children with serious and often life-threatening illnesses.

Children affected by serious illness, primarily cancer, come from all across Ireland, Europe, and now the United States, to take part in safe and professional programs of adventure and activities - such as high ropes, horse riding, music, photography, archery, and drama – supported behind the scenes 24/7 by professional medical staff and trained volunteers. Our residential camps are delivered using a “therapeutic recreation” model which allows children to rebuild confidence, trust, and self-esteem through facing challenges, achieving success in overcoming them, and reflecting on and discovering their own strengths. The children who come to Barretstown experience some “Serious Fun” and go home with increased confidence, self-esteem, independence, and new friendships.

Barretstown Foundation USA was founded in the summer of 2018 in New York City for the purpose of facilitating Barretstown’s vision that many more seriously ill children in Ireland and beyond will benefit from Barretstown’s ‘magic’ over the coming years.

As we embark on our new phase of growth, we have ambitious plans to partner with communities in the US on two key objectives:
