Barretstown is a specially-designed camp in County Kildare, Ireland, founded by actor and philanthropist Paul Newman. Barretstown is a proud member of the SeriousFun Children’s Network, a growing global community of independently managed and financed camps and programs. Established in 1994, with the generous donation of our 500 acre estate by the Irish Government, Barretstown was the first camp of its kind to be opened outside the USA and the third camp founded by Paul. Barretstown provides Therapeutic Recreation programs for children with serious and often life-threatening illnesses.
Children affected by serious illness, primarily cancer, come from all across Ireland, Europe, and now the United States, to take part in safe and professional programs of adventure and activities - such as high ropes, horse riding, music, photography, archery, and drama – supported behind the scenes 24/7 by professional medical staff and trained volunteers. Our residential camps are delivered using a “therapeutic recreation” model which allows children to rebuild confidence, trust, and self-esteem through facing challenges, achieving success in overcoming them, and reflecting on and discovering their own strengths. The children who come to Barretstown experience some “Serious Fun” and go home with increased confidence, self-esteem, independence, and new friendships.
Barretstown Foundation USA was founded in the summer of 2018 in New York City for the purpose of facilitating Barretstown’s vision that many more seriously ill children in Ireland and beyond will benefit from Barretstown’s ‘magic’ over the coming years.
As we embark on our new phase of growth, we have ambitious plans to partner with communities in the US on two key objectives:
1. Support for children with serious illness from the United States by establishing referral relationships for teenage campers with US Hospitals.
The number of children with serious illness that could benefit from one of Barretstown’s life changing programs is almost limitless. The medical community now fully recognize the vital role our programs play for children and families who are on the traumatic journey through serious, and often life threatening, illness. We plan, over the next five years, to increase the number of children we serve both in Ireland and the US. This can be done through making places available in our programs in Ireland or accessing places in our US based sister camps in the SeriousFun Children’s Network.
2. Opportunities for Summer College Work Placements for College Students from the U.S. by creating programs with US Colleges.
Volunteers are the heart of Barretstown’s programs. We depend on some 1,800 volunteers each year to enable us to run our programs both in Barretstown and also for our outreach programs. We would like to make a number of places available for College Students seeking summer placements in the non-profit sector. For the successful applicants, Barretstown will provide an extraordinary life changing summer placement with full board. During this summer placement, students will learn leadership skills, behavior support training, communication skills, role Modelling for children, teens and young adults, creating camp culture, and the power and value of volunteering.
One of the founding principles of Barretstown is that campers and their families come here because of need rather than ability to pay. Each year, it costs over €5 million ($5.8 million) to run the programs at Barretstown, and to fully realize our vision and significantly increase the number of children we reach, Barretstown must raise an additional €500,000 per year for five years, totaling €2.5 million to realize our vision and restore the self-esteem and confidence of thousands more children who are undergoing traumatic illness. We hope you join us in bringing Barretstown’s magic to the US.
