Children of Promise, NYC Providing children with incarcerated parents the guidance, support and resources they need to thrive.

When a child loses a parent, whether they pass away, leave because of divorce or military deployment, the child receives sympathy and community support. When a parent goes to prison, their children don’t receive that same care. Over 2 million children in the United States experience the detrimental economic, social and emotional effects of a parent’s incarceration. They often experience the trauma of multiple changes in caregivers, separation from siblings and inconsistent living arrangements. Studies have shown that parental arrest and confinement often lead to stress, trauma, shame and separation anxiety which may be compounded by existing poverty, violence, substance abuse and high crime communities. Many children of incarcerated parents are angry and lash out at others, leading to disruptions in school and confrontations with law enforcement and authority figures.

Two volunteer groups from the VML Foundation (VML) worked with us to make a difference in the lives of our scholars. One group of volunteers took charge of cleaning and beautifying our after-school space, while the other group helped our scholars with their homework and assignments.

On September 17th and 19th, Children of Promise, NYC brought together youth and adult volunteers to beautify CPNYC locations and surrounding neighborhoods through gardening, art, and cleaning.

To honor the 25th Anniversary of 9/11, CPNYC joined a nationwide movement to transform the anniversary into America’s Day of Doing Good, reclaiming September 11 as an annual moment of national reflection, unity, and action. 9/11 Day AmeriCorps

With more than 100 million Americans now having little or no personal memory of September 11, 2001, local service projects ensure future generations remember not only the tragic events of that day, but also the extraordinary compassion, courage, selflessness, and spirit of unity that emerged in its aftermath. 

Remember, volunteer service helps to strengthen communities like ours, and brings us together through service.

Happy Birthday to an extraordinary woman, mother, friend, and visionary leader! She is the CEO and founder of Children of Promise, NYC, Mrs. Sharon Content!

This year, your birthday comes at a difficult time, as you continue to grieve the loss of your beloved father. Yet in the midst of your grief, your strength and grace continue to shine through.

Today, we hope that you will allow yourself a moment to receive some of the love that you so freely give to everyone around you. We know that your father is an important part of the woman you are today, and that his love, lessons, and legacy continue through you. So while this birthday may feel different, we hope it can also be a reminder of the beautiful life you live and the countless lives that are better because of you.

May this next chapter bring you peace when you need it, strength when you feel weary, unexpected moments of joy, and an abundance of the same love you have poured into so many others.

Seems like we’re always going somewhere at CPNYC!

This summer we went on, as many as, 74 field trips, campus tours, and enrichment experiences for our scholars to get out, have fun, and be exposed to new things.
