FINAL HOURS TO APPLY: 2026 GRANT CYCLE

Deadline: Tonight October 12 at 11:59 p.m. EDT

Today is the final day to submit your application to the 2026 Grant Cycle. If you have been considering applying, there is still time to submit your work and be part of this year’s grant cycle. We look forward to seeing your work!

The W. Eugene Smith Grant:
$30,000 awarded to one recipient.
$10,000 each to two finalists.

The Eugene Smith Student Grant:
$5,000 each to two student photographers, open to full-time and part-time undergraduate, graduate, and recognized photography program students.

The Howard Chapnick Grant:
$7,500 awarded to a program (not an individual) that significantly advances documentary photography through education.

This year’s adjudication process will be managed and directed by Eugene Smith Fund Board Member, and President, Marcia Allert.

OPEN CALL: Student Photographers

This year’s Eugene Smith Student Grant is awarding $5,000 each to two student photographers.

This grant encourages and supports students whose photographic work renews the tradition of W. Eugene Smith’s dedicated compassion, which he demonstrated during his 45-year career as a photographic essayist. Special consideration will be given to work that promotes social change, embraces new technologies and image distribution, and seeks to integrate the tradition of photography and social change with contemporary practice.

2025 Grantee Spotlight: Maen Hammad

Today we are highlighting Maen Hammad, 2025 W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant Recipient for his powerful project “Amira’s Castle”.

“Amira’s Castle is an ongoing exploration of my grandparents’ lives—Amira and Mohammad—and my own documentation of the Palestinian present. At its center are three threads – my grandfather’s revolutionary archive, my grandmother’s daily practice of tending to the land they reclaimed, and my documentation of the struggle unfolding today. Together they form a dialogue across time, drawing the archive and the land into conversation—and pressing me to confront what my responsibility is in carrying those legacies forward today.”
