2025 Grantee Spotlight: Rena Effendi

We are excited to share the work of Rena Effendi, 2025 W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant Finalist for her project on the Caspian Sea. This work traces changes along the Caspian Sea, including pollution and drying reed beds, as well as other losses scientists believe may be irreversible.

This year, we invite entries for the W. Eugene Smith Grant, the W. Eugene Smith Student Grant, and the Howard Chapnick Grant. Apply today and share this opportunity within your communities. We can't wait to see your submissions!

The W. Eugene Smith Grant:
$30,000 awarded to one recipient.
$10,000 each to two Finalists.

The Eugene Smith Student Grant:
$5,000 each to two student photographers.

The Howard Chapnick Grant:
$7,500 awarded to a program.

2025 Grantee Spotlight: Maen Hammad

Today we are highlighting Maen Hammad, 2025 W. Eugene Smith Fund Grant Recipient for his powerful project “Amira’s Castle”.

“Amira’s Castle is an ongoing exploration of my grandparents’ lives—Amira and Mohammad—and my own documentation of the Palestinian present. At its center are three threads – my grandfather’s revolutionary archive, my grandmother’s daily practice of tending to the land they reclaimed, and my documentation of the struggle unfolding today. Together they form a dialogue across time, drawing the archive and the land into conversation—and pressing me to confront what my responsibility is in carrying those legacies forward today.”
