Statement by the Upper Manhattan Interfaith Coalition

October 9, 2026
On Thursday, October 8, in the Marble Hill section of Manhattan, an ICE agent shot and wounded a man inside his car while his five-year-old son was present. This is an alarming and unacceptable use of force that puts our entire community, including children, at risk.
The Upper Manhattan Interfaith Coalition unambiguously denounces these actions of ICE officers in our neighborhood. We stand united in support of the safety of all members in our community, and are determined to uphold the right of each of our neighbors to be treated with dignity, respect, and due process.

We call on the NYPD to unite with the people of Upper Manhattan to resist ICE operations and to protect our city against violence. We pray in unity with all those who are fearful, uncertain of the future, and in need of comfort because of the terrorization tactics used by Federal immigration officials.

Guided by our faith and commitment to promoting social justice, we emphatically denounce the violence, fear, threats to public safety and affronts to human dignity that ICE has been perpetrating. Most recently an ICE officer shot and injured a young man while his five-year-old child was present in the car. While these actions are abhorrent on their own, the details of this particular incident continue to further shock and dismay– that a child was in the car while at least seven bullets were fired; that it occurred in the late afternoon on crowded sidewalks full of parents and children on their way home from school; that the ICE agents were, once again, not clearly identified as ICE agents, one of whom also continued to flaunt an assault r***e in the aftermath of the shooting.

This incident took place in Marble Hill, just across the bridge from us; a neighborhood that reflects a similar diversity of languages, races, ethnicities, immigrant backgrounds, and traditions. This diversity has recently come under attack with harmful dehumanizing language intended to justify lawlessness in hunting our community members. Let us be clear that all human beings deserve to be treated with dignity and respect. We affirm basic human rights and due process for all, no matter their immigration status.

We will continue to educate our community members of our rights. We will continue to publicly stand in solidarity with those being marginalized to pray for justice and peace and to orient our actions toward those principles. We will continue to collaborate with other faith leaders, community members, youth leaders, and all people of goodwill who want to work to bring people together rather than tear communities apart.
