Moving Picture Institute The Moving Picture Institute is a production company and talent incubator.

MPI films regularly appear in prominent film festivals, win international critical acclaim, and garner coverage from major news outlets, including the Hollywood Reporter, the New York Times, Deadline, and the Wall Street Journal. MPI Original Films include "Miss Virginia" starring Emmy-winner Uzo Aduba ("Orange Is the New Black"), "A Piece of Cake" led by Rich Sommer ("Mad Men"), and "Regulation" featuring Sunita Mana ("GLOW"). You can watch MPI Original Films on your favorite streaming service including Apple TV, Netflix, and Prime Video. Since its founding in 2005, MPI has awarded an impressive 370 Rising Filmmaker Program fellowships and 200 Hollywood Career Launch Program internships. Each fellowship represents another career boosted, as well as another compelling story told about the importance of individual rights, free enterprise, and fighting against oppression. MPI-supported filmmakers have earned top recognition and awards over the course of their careers, including Emmy Awards, a Guinness World Record, an Oscar nomination, a spot on the BAFTA long list for Best Short Film, and more.

This Thursday, the MPI Original feature KEMBA will screen at the Kansas City Public Library as part of its Domestic Violence Awareness Month programming.

Based on a true story, KEMBA follows a sheltered college student who falls in love with a man who turns out to be an abusive drug dealer—and later receives an excessive prison sentence for his crimes.

Kemba Smith Pradia, whose story inspired the film, will join the audience for a discussion following the screening.

🎬 MPI filmmaker Toby Fell-Holden and his project HELP IS ON THE WAY have been named the winner of MPI’s inaugural First Feature Lab!

Announced during last week’s Meet the Filmmakers event in New York City, the script will now move forward toward production as an MPI Original feature film.

HELP IS ON THE WAY follows a fiercely independent, opinionated man and his foul-mouthed 82-year-old mother whose refusal of a voluntary inspection turns them into barricaded suspects with a rapidly growing online audience.

Congratulations to Toby on this exciting next step—and to all nine filmmakers who developed projects during the lab. The strength of their work made selecting a winner incredibly difficult, and we can’t wait to see what each of them does next.

The national conversation about education has once again raised a question parents across the country face: What happens when your child’s school isn’t giving them the education they deserve?

The MPI Original feature film MISS VIRGINIA, starring Uzo Aduba, tells the true story of Virginia Walden Ford, a Washington, DC, mother who refused to accept that a child’s ZIP code should determine the quality of their education.

After seeing her son struggle in DC’s school system, Virginia fought to give him, and thousands of other children, access to better educational options.

Starring Freddy Rodriguez (SIX FEET UNDER, PLANET TERROR, and POSEIDON), POCKET CHANGE follows a mysterious drifter whose seemingly worthless quarter may be the key to saving a group of strangers when the power goes out at a remote roadside diner.
