is the 17th largest contributor of peacekeepers to the United Nations with 761, now serving in five peacekeeping missions.

Malawian peacekeepers are deployed with the UN operations in Abyei (United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei), the Democratic Republic of the Congo (United Nations Mission in the DR Congo - Monusco), Lebanon (UNIFIL-PIO), South Sudan (United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS)) and Western Sahara ( ).

Malawian peacekeepers protect civilians, patrol conflict zones, and support stabilization efforts in high-risk missions.

A total of 31 peacekeepers from Malawi have lost their lives while serving under the UN flag. We honour their memory.

In four United Nations Peacekeeping missions around the world, over 750 military and police officers from Malawi are serving for peace, leaving their families to protect those most at risk.

Upholding the highest standards of conduct and protecting the communities we serve remain central to MONUSCO’s mandate in the .

Through dedicated community-based networks, MONUSCO works closely with local communities to raise awareness on expected conduct, strengthen reporting mechanisms, and ensure that concerns can be safely brought forward. These efforts help foster accountability, promote prevention, and support access to appropriate assistance and justice mechanisms.

On the ground, community-based networks help ensure voices can be heard, by “rais[ing] awareness about people’s rights and how to report violations.” These spaces allow those affected to speak out, report, and seek justice.

Pour la Capitaine Asafo-Adjei, instaurer la confiance passe avant tout par l’écoute des populations, et par la participation des femmes au dialogue.

À la tête de son peloton dans le Secteur Sud, elle va régulièrement à la rencontre des habitants pour mieux comprendre leurs préoccupations en matière de sécurité et faire remonter leurs besoins. Une attention particulière est accordée aux femmes, aux enfants et aux personnes âgées, dont les voix sont parfois moins entendues.

En tant que point focal pour les questions de genre de son bataillon, elle est également à l’origine de patrouilles entièrement composées de femmes Casques bleus dans les marchés, les villages et auprès des communautés. Ces échanges permettent notamment aux femmes de parler plus librement de leurs préoccupations et de mieux connaître les moyens de signaler les violences fondées sur le genre.

Ces patrouilles contribuent aussi à faire évoluer les perceptions. En occupant pleinement des fonctions opérationnelles sur le terrain, la Capitaine Asafo-Adjei et ses collègues montrent concrètement que les femmes ont toute leur place dans les opérations de sécurité. Lors de déplacements de population provoqués par des affrontements, elle a également veillé à ce que les besoins spécifiques des femmes et des enfants soient pris en compte, tout en maintenant le dialogue avec les habitants lors de leur retour.

Son engagement montre que la participation des femmes au maintien de la paix peut renforcer la confiance, améliorer la protection des populations et permettre à davantage de femmes de prendre part aux décisions qui concernent leur sécurité.

As we mark the 26th anniversary of the Women, Peace and Security Agenda, we reaffirm our commitment to promoting gender equality and ensuring women’s meaningful participation in peacekeeping and political processes.

Today, six of the eleven United Nations peacekeeping missions (UNFICYP, MINUSCA 🇨🇫, United Nations Mission in the DR Congo - Monusco 🇨🇩, United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) 🇸🇸, UNIFIL-PIO, and United Nations Interim Security Force for Abyei) include explicit provisions in their mandates, highlighting the growing recognition of women’s essential role in peace and security.

We must continue to step up efforts to fully implement the Women, Peace and Security agenda across all missions and contexts, because lasting peace cannot be achieved without women.

Meet Maria Michela Tagliacozzi Lanciotti from 🇮🇹, serving as Gender Advisor with the United Nations Interim Force in .

For Maria, advancing peace and security means creating spaces where everyone, especially women, can participate, be heard and contribute to their communities.

Working closely with municipalities, schools, local organizations and women’s associations, she has developed initiatives that help women and girls strengthen their confidence, leadership and resilience, including psychosocial support and empowerment activities.

Her engagement has also helped bring women closer to local decision-making. Through dialogue with community leaders and authorities, Maria has supported women-led consultation groups and more inclusive community safety initiatives, helping women move from being seen as beneficiaries to active partners in shaping their communities.

She also works to ensure that inclusion goes beyond women alone. Men and boys are engaged in conversations around wellbeing, caregiving and violence prevention, while activities are designed to be accessible to children, older persons and persons with disabilities.

Within UNIFIL-PIO, Maria brings these perspectives into military planning, helping ensure that the different needs and experiences of communities inform how peacekeepers engage and operate.
Her work shows that the agenda is ultimately about participation: creating the conditions for women to have a voice, communities to become more resilient and peace to be built by everyone.

This Women, Peace and Security Month, we recognize women peacekeepers like Maria who are helping strengthen trust, inclusion and resilience in the communities we serve.

The role of women in peacekeeping was a prominent topic at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

Setting the stage with his opening remarks, Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized, “Peace is more durable when women are at the table.”

Khurelsukh Ukhnaa, President of 🇲🇳, underscored his country’s commitment to the agenda and increasing women’s participation in peacekeeping. "Mongolia has been actively advancing the implementation of United Nations Security Council resolution 1325," he stressed.

Prime Minister of 🇧🇩, Tarique Rahman, stated his nation’s support, noting, “the courageous participation of Bangladeshi women in peacekeeping missions, even under adverse circumstances, reflects our strong commitment to advancing the agenda of Women, Peace and Security.”

Reflecting on post-conflict settings, President of 🇳🇦 Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah praised the positive impact of the Women, Peace and Security agenda, explaining that it “has contributed positively to the rehabilitation, reconciliation, and reintegration efforts in conflict-affected regions, serving as a core framework for stabilizing post-conflict situations.”

🇱🇺 and 🇹🇳 also highlighted the importance of gender inclusion and its impact on peace.

Across peacekeeping contexts, women are leading peace and mediation efforts, organizing communities, and building solutions every day. UN Peacekeeping continues to support this work by promoting women’s participation in peace processes, protecting their rights, and advancing inclusive mandates.
