New York To Mumbai By Road

The last Kazakh city before the border to china was Zarkent. En-route to Zarkent, we picked up fresh fruit that Kazakhstan is known. Once we arrived in the city, we met up with Team Kontiki for a final evening in beautiful Kazakhstan.

In Kazakhstan, one could say 'all roads lead to Almaty'. Almaty, is Kazakhstan's largest city and was the Capital up until 1997. The team made some friends in Astana and they invited us to visit them in Almaty. Additionally, Stephen Jan rejoined the team here to enter China.

After a couple days in Russian, the team entered Kazakhstan from Troitsk, Russia. It is no exaggeration to say that Kazakhs were the most hospitable people the team encountered on the journey.

We made good time in Europe, and crossed into Russia at a small border crossing from Estonia. We didn't get to see St Petersburg like originally planned but did get to see Moscow. We were well on our way to make up lost time!

The first leg of our journey took us through Europe. The initial plan to take our time and see Europe was out the window. We were able catch a glimpse of Latvia, Germany, and Poland.

The car finally arrived at the port in Liverpool. The team took the last midnight train out of London and picked up the car on September 5, 2016. The following day, we started our much anticipated journey to Mumbai!

The shipping company informed the team that the car arrival would be delayed past the original three day estimate. Deciding to take full advantage of our time in Europe, we took a two day side trip to Paris. Devanshi Gandhi Modi had never been to Paris. The last time Kunal and Stephen visited was in 2011, driving through the city en route to Timbuktu.

We arrived in London on August 25, 2016 to much uncertainty. Days earlier, the shipping company informed us that there was a problem on the vessel carrying our car. Delivery would be delayed for an unknown time.

We met up with old friends, extended family, and a new friend: a Mr Rajendra Karadia. We would be travelling with Raj and his team Kontiki through China and Myanmar. As Raj continued to make preparations for his departure, we made plans to wait as long as it took for our own journey to begin.
