Brothers Franco and Joaquin recently traded Argentina for Nebraska to level up their careers and their English. Between mastering new skills at their electronics engineering internship and enjoying home-cooked dinners with local families, they discovered that the best part of the U.S. is the welcoming sense of community.

Franco's favorite memory:
"What I liked most about U.S. culture is how welcoming and friendly people are. I really appreciated the sense of community and how much they enjoy sharing time, experiences, and traditions together. A memorable experience I had in the U.S. was sharing mate with my American friends for the first time. It was special because mate is meant to be enjoyed together, and they were very open to learning about my culture. We spent a great time talking, laughing, and sharing traditions."

Joaquin’s takeaway:
"I learned a lot about working in a large international company, had an excellent experience working with electronic devices, and improved my English. I also met a wonderful family who started inviting me over for dinner, and we took a few trips together to explore Nebraska and Kansas. Since they are school teachers, they love talking about a wide variety of topics. Meeting them was honestly the best thing that happened to me."

Last week, members of the InterExchange team attended the 2026 Summer Work Travel Community Support Group (CSG) Summit in Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. 🏔️

The summit brought together U.S. Department of State officials, J-1 Visa sponsors, employers, and other local stakeholders to discuss the future of international exchange programs, and our team was right in the middle of it.

Meave Treacy and Becky Davis co-led a session with the U.S. Department of State on the Summer Work Travel program, covering program monitoring, stakeholder roles, and key milestones. We also heard from local leaders, gave back through a volunteer initiative at Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and wrapped things up with a visit to Dollywood.
Moments like these remind us why this work matters.

Originally from Mexico, Sarai is currently immersing herself in the fast-paced world of international trade through an 18-month traineeship in Chicago. From mastering the complexities of U.S. export processes to celebrating company values with her team, she is embracing every opportunity for professional growth and cultural connection. Read more about how this experience is transforming her career and her perspective on life in the U.S.

"So far I have learned a lot about how logistics is handled from the U.S. to other countries. It is fascinating to see how organized [everything is] at each stage of the export process, and of course, I cannot ignore the fact that my English speaking skills have increased significantly...[My host company] has also been very involved in ensuring that the experience for the trainees is the most pleasant, since they have organized many activities so that we can get to know the culture of this country....[During our company's Values Day], we remembered what is important to [the] company and how they make sure to comply with the values that represent the United States of America. Not only was it a day of celebration but it was a day of sharing experiences with people from this country. I really enjoyed it and I am waiting to get more experiences like that one."

Language is more than words; it’s a bridge. 🇲🇽 Christianson Fellow Lillian Leibovich recently completed her project in Oaxaca, Mexico, where a Day of the Dead gathering led to a powerful cross-cultural exchange.

Lillian connected with a local named Carlo to compare Zapotec dialects, discussing the beauty of Indigenous heritage and the resilience required to preserve it.

Lillian’s advice for impactful service:
1️⃣ Be prepared for the emotional journey of long-term travel.
2️⃣ Keep both feet planted in your host community.
3️⃣ Use cultural learning as a foundation for social fulfillment.

What is the Christianson Fellowship?

It’s a fellowship offered by the InterExchange Foundation that financially supports U.S. citizens participating in impactful, independently-arranged international service projects. Fellows gain hands-on global experience while making a meaningful, sustainable contribution to communities worldwide.
