Housing Equity Project

Housing Equity Project Additionally, New York State law requires that a volunteer with a permanent address stay overnight at homeless shelters.

Housing Equity Project is dedicated to serving folks experiencing homelessness and food insecurity and mitigating the harmful impacts of Columbia University's gentrification and expansion throughout Morningside Heights and West Harlem. Housing Equity Project (HEP) is a student organization that staffs two small homeless shelters in Manhattan and provides emergency relief to folks experiencing home

lessness and/or food insecurity within the Morningside Heights community. By directly interacting with our neighbors in need, HEP encourages students to build a meaningful attachment and acknowledge their obligation to the community they inhabit. By sending Columbia and Barnard students, HEP ensures that the two shelters we serve to remain open for the folks who are on track to receive permanent housing from the City of New York.
