FROM THE ARCHIVES….
Performed at the Jamaica Dance Festival in June 2024, this excerpt from Kaleidoscope explores the loss of balance in nature, as rhythm and movement shift from harmony into confrontation. The choreography becomes sharper and more forceful, with aggressive use of the arms and rhythmic interplay building tension and unrest, showing how quickly coexistence can break down into chaos.

Srividhya Chandramouleeswarna will present Shiva Stuti — a vibrant ode to Shiva that weaves together rhythm, storytelling, devotion, and movement through jathis, swarams, and sahityam. Moving through many facets of Shiva — from the compassionate ascetic to the destroyer of Tripura — the piece embodies the fullness of Bharatanatyam itself.

One of the first compositions she learned under her current guru, A Lakshmanaswamy, this work remains deeply meaningful to her as a reminder that Bharatanatyam is far more than movement alone — it is music, poetry, storytelling, and devotion brought to life through the body.

Srividhya is a Bharatanatyam dancer and multidisciplinary artist based in NYC. She has trained for over 15 years, first under Smt. Janani Narayanan and currently under Achaarya Choodamani A Lakshmanaswamy in Chennai. Alongside performing across the US and India, she is currently studying Integrated Design & Media and Computer Science at NYU, with interests spanning dance, storytelling, visual media, and technology.

Our next artist at the showcase is Swarna Roy Shanta, presenting a dynamic Kathak evening featuring a Tarana composed by Shibli Mohammad alongside Niratata Dhang, inspired by the poetry of Pandit Bindadin Maharaj of the Lucknow gharana.

Through intricate footwork, rhythmic tihais, swift chakkars, and vibrant musicality, the work evokes the joyous dance of Krishna, Radha, and the gopis in Vrindavan — celebrating rhythm, devotion, and movement in motion.

Swarna began training in Kathak at the age of three and has since performed widely across Bangladesh and India. A National Gold Medal recipient, honored by the Speaker and President of Bangladesh, she has represented Bangladeshi cultural traditions on stages across Kolkata, Guwahati, Haryana, and beyond, continuing to share the richness of classical dance with audiences internationally.
