Transfernation

Transfernation Our food waste is our problem. Transfernation is a cultural movement. Transfernation changes this culture of waste.

Transfernation's app helps corporate cafeterias, hospitality groups, and restaurants send their untouched extra food to people and places that can use it.

We aim to make the preservation of extra food such an integral part of peoples everyday lives, that waste-culture is eliminated or significantly reduced in the United States. We work on the basis of two online platforms: a web

site and a smartphone app, that connect those with extra food to those who need it. We connect corporations to soup kitchens so that all extra food is given to the most vulnerable in our communities. Currently, the United States wastes 40% of the food its citizens produce, and one day of food waste in America can feed the world three times around. We combat hunger by eliminating waste culture and utilizing what we already have instead of investing in what we can't afford. In only 2 years, we have redistributed more than 50,000 lbs of food and fed more than 40,000 people with just an email server and a small list of volunteers. In 2017, we plan to release our app in order to leverage technology to get the entire city of NY in on the action.

For me its always been about being aware and being present, and I think the experience that being on a bike facilitates is the speed at which you can make observations. There’s a lot less pressure than being in a car, that allows me to stop what I’m doing and get close. Riding with pure curiosity is really important, especially a time like this when everything is changing. It’s very easy to notice environments in which there may be opportunities. When you’re riding around you just notice things like, hey this restaurant looks like they’re making a lot of food for the day and not serving all of it. Or this church has a line around the corner every time I’m passing it at this particular time, I wonder what they’re doing. There’s a church on 93rd and Broadway thats a perfect example of me being on a route and just noticing that every time I pass it on Saturday morning theres this line outside. One Saturday I went inside and they tell me there’s a pantry and a meal service every Saturday morning. The next logical question for me is always: Do you guys receive prepared food? And their answer is yes. And then I follow that up with: Would you like some right now? And the answer is always Absolutely! And then the location just becomes part of our ecosystem.

(2/3) “As a New Yorker born and raised in East Harlem, there’s a lot of anxiety. People kind of feel like they’re on their own. There’s been very little investment in ensuring that people have mobility upwards and they’ve been in limbo. People forget that New York City is still very segregated. It’s very much two different worlds almost living on top of each other. People who enjoy living comfortably very seldom recognize how hard it is to move out from the cycles of poverty and being exploited.
Before the pandemic there was this sense that, “Oh the economy’s great! Unemployment’s going down!” but when you zoom in on what that actually means, it means temporary gig jobs, no healthcare, people didn’t even have $400 in the event of an emergency to spend on anything. It’s not a real level of success that we should be proud of. People were working two to three jobs, myself included, to get by. And then you have this extreme inequality of mega wealth accumulating at the top that doesn’t filter down into peoples lived experience”.

(1/3) “I’m excited for leadership in this country that can carry us through to a economy focused on climate change.
The economy can go up, it can go down, some people will do better than others, but we’re all basically going off a cliff together. There are very few people in the room it seems that are talking with the urgency, the vision, moving in a sense of like, we have a real problem here. This isn’t something that we can just keep putting off. It’s not even something that can stop at this point. Now it’s just a question of what we’re going to end up living with and what we can attempt to do to heal the planet that we live on that we’ve been taking for granted”.

(3/3) “I want to open a little food donation business myself. A restaurant that’s going to feed everyone, and we’ll find a way to keep going. But the goal is to feed everyone with good cooking. My mom used to own a Caribbean food restaurant before the pandemic. She had it for four years, but it got a little hard for her so she couldn’t keep up with it. She gave it up and went back to cooking in the house. She’s got loyal customers because she’s big in the church, she’s been feeding them all her life. My mom, my grandma, they’ve always been involved with feeding the churches, and feeding the neighborhood in Brooklyn, my friends, family, everybody. The restaurant business is a hard business and she couldn’t make it. She told me that if she ever got another chance, she would have no problem going back in the kitchen. She’s going to cook some beautiful food for the world”.

“My childhood was beautiful. I came from a big family, a big big family. My grandmother and my grandfather had ten kids. She came to this country in ’89, I came in ’93 and we’ve all always been living close. My grandmother is a chef, my mom’s a chef. And that’s all we have. Cooking all day, all types of food. I’ve always had a plan to get involved with food. It’s always been a big part of my life. I grew up in Brooklyn and every year, my mom is a vendor on Labor Day and Guyanese day. We sell food. That’s the only business we know. My great grandma had a big bread store back home in Guyana. A big, big store. They sold all types of food. Our whole house was a kitchen. And that’s something I’m trying to build here."

“This is my neighborhood. I live right here in Harlem. My kids are growing up here right now. I’ve got five kids, four girls and a boy. They go to the school right behind the church that I drop donations off to. I’ve been passing that church for almost ten years now. I know all these restaurants. I’m so happy to be helping the restaurants and the neighborhood. It’s growing and I’m happy we’re here because it really needs our help. With me doing this work I get to keep an eye on the neighborhood and keep an eye on my kids. I can help the community grow, see my kids while I’m doing my deliveries, and my kids can see me doing something good. It’s right next to their school so they cannot miss it! A lot of people in the neighborhood are seeing me do it, and it’s helping people”.
