Drama over BSA chair nominee puts critics in awkward role of agreeing with the NYC Mayor's Office

Mayor Zohran Mamdani’s pick for the Board of Standards and Appeals, a body recently granted more authority over approving housing projects, puts some critics in the unusual position of agreeing with the mayor.

This week, members of the conservative think tank Manhattan Institute wrote an op-ed for City Journal arguing that Mamdani’s selection of housing policy veteran John Mangin should have been a “straightforward appointment.”

A meeting is scheduled on Thursday, August 6th at 6:30 pm at the Lady of Lourdes School (Gymnasium) to update community residents and to introduce the legal team for a lawsuit filed last week against the City of New York over its approval of a development at 1727 Amsterdam Ave. that would demolish a 60,000-sq-ft health center serving 10,000 low-income, Medicaid, and uninsured patients (37,000 visits last year). One of the two clinics on-site — Heritage, a federally qualified health center — would be permanently removed; the other cut to roughly a third of its space.

Three state legislators — Sen. Cordell Cleare and Assembly Members Al Taylor and Jordan Wright — have joined community members as plaintiffs. The suit says the City skipped a full environmental review and ignored a Community Board 9 plan that would keep the health center and build more deeply affordable housing (468 → 1,127 residents), aimed at what people in the neighborhood actually earn.

The decisions made in the coming weeks could have a lasting impact on our neighborhood, and a strong community turnout will demonstrate that residents care about shaping the future of Hamilton Heights.Please join us—and help spread the word. Mamdani-backed socialist Darializa Avila Chevalier defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat in the Democratic primary for the 13th Congressional District in New York.

The controversial candidate once called the United States a "f---ing disgrace" and has advocated for abolishing borders, prisons and police.

As it's currently drawn, NY-13 has never been represented by a Republican, so Avila Chevalier is poised to win the general election in November and earn a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives.
