Disability Pride Month may be coming to a close, but our practice is still deepening.

Animal Justice cannot move toward collective liberation while actively reproducing eugenic logics rooted in ableism, white supremacy, anti-Blackness, colonialism, capitalism, and heteropatriarchy.

Creating this carousel has meant returning to work we know and encountering work that is new to us with active reverence.

Our responsibility deepens as we remain in relationship with this work.

Multiple members of the APEX team are disabled.
We are a Black, Brown, and q***r team, and we are accountable to our disabled Black, Indigenous and brown, q***r communities. Accountability includes listening to disabled organizers, materially supporting B.I.P.O.C. disabled folk, and redistributing resources. These practices are essential to keeping our communities alive.

This month we’re reading excerpts from William Golding’s ‘Lord of the Flies’ alongside Lola Olvera’s Sentient Media article, ‘Protesters, Pigs and the Diversity Problem in Animal Welfare’.

The texts do not sit comfortably together. What sounds like a scream of bloody murder in one becomes something else in the other, drawing us into questions of patriarchal violence, Black liberation politics, animal advocacy, and solidarity.

Our executive director Yvette 🌿🪶🌈🇵🇸🇨🇩🇸🇩 sat down to talk about the work we do at APEX and to say plainly what too many movements refuse: plant-based living is not a colonial import.

For Afro-Indigenous communities, plant-centered eating can be ancestral practice, political memory, and a refusal to let extractive food systems write our futures. Veganism and Indigeneity were never at odds.

This interview holds the holistic, the political, and the decolonial together, because you can’t separate what we eat from who profits, who’s displaced, who’s exploited, whose bodies are commodified, and who’s fed.

We celebrate the Black joy, rest, defiance, resilience, and persistence because they’re ours - but the reckoning is still owed and we won’t ignore the contradictions.

Yvette and Sunny met in person for the first time this week. We’ve been trying to build liberation strategies across screens and virtual spreadsheets, doing work that demands much more than that.

In-person relationship, shared space, and the ability to conceptualize together without a business-day-lag sometimes feel like unattainable luxury to us. But this is basic infrastructure. And infrastructure requires resourcing.

Most are by now aware that Black-founded orgs receive a fraction of the “philanthropic” monetary support that flow to white-led counterparts, and that the gap widens for the unrestricted funding that actually lets an org breathe, plan, and survive. In the animal rights sector, we watch millions flow to orgs built on demonstrably misleading claims about saving animals - groups funneling massive funds to celebrities willing to eat plant-based for a month.

We are not imagining the scarcity. It is engineered, and it is directional.

The deeper contradiction is that the nonprofit industrial complex shouldn’t exist. It is a symptom, and APEX is part of the proof that the state has refused to resource the liberation of the people it spent centuries extracting from. We’ve done grassroots, unpaid work for decades, pouring ourselves into the gaps the state left open. Mutual aid shouldn’t have to exist. Fundraisers shouldn’t have to exist. But here we are, building lifeboats because the ship was designed to drown us.

Our message to you is that material solidarity is what solidarity actually looks like. And ‘material’ isn’t synonymous with cash (though we need it and we’ll take it!). It can look like registering to our events or actually showing up to the event you registered for. It can look like sharing our posts so the work travels further than we can carry it alone. It can look like donating items for a fundraiser. Ultimately, it’s you, internalizing that solidarity isn’t a feeling you have, but a practice you keep. You show up in whatever ways you can.

On Rats and Race: Dispossession, Disenfranchisement, and Despair

What does it mean when rats become currency for survival? What can infestations reveal about racial capitalism, war, displacement, abandonment, and the conditions people are forced to endure?

Our virtual discussion will unpack the political and historical symbolism of rats, poverty, and survival across literature, poetry, and contemporary reporting.

We’ll explore excerpts from ‘Native Son’ by Richard Wright, selections from ‘Arc & Hue’ by Tara Betts, ‘Rat’ by Johnathan Burt, and recent BBC reporting on rats spreading through displaced persons camps in Gaza.

These texts illuminate how systems of neglect, racialized dispossession, colonial violence, and economic extraction shape the environments people are forced to survive within.

From families killing rats to reduce rent payments, to children in Gaza sleeping amid collapsing sanitation infrastructure and disease outbreaks, this discussion asks participants to critically examine the relationship between poverty, public health, housing, empire, and disposability. We will also explore how literature and poetry help us process despair while creating space for resistance, dignity, and collective analysis.
