Continuing our AANHPI Mighty Mentor Spotlight, we have Grace Lee Boggs!

Grace Lee Boggs, a philosopher, activist, and writer, dedicated her life to advancing social change and empowering communities. Born in Rhode Island to Chinese immigrant parents, Grace's journey towards activism was shaped by her experiences of racism and inequality, which fueled her commitment to justice and transformation.

Grace's activism spanned decades and encompassed a wide range of issues, from civil rights and labor rights to environmental justice and feminism. She played a pivotal role in the Civil Rights Movement, working alongside leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and advocating for racial equality and economic justice.

One of Grace's most significant contributions was her emphasis on grassroots organizing and community empowerment. She believed in the power of ordinary people to effect meaningful change in their communities and encouraged collective action and self-determination. Grace's work in Detroit, where she lived for much of her life, focused on building sustainable, equitable communities through initiatives like urban gardening and neighborhood revitalization projects.

Grace's philosophy of "revolutionary love" emphasized the importance of love, compassion, and empathy in the struggle for justice. She believed that transformative change required not only political activism but also a fundamental shift in consciousness towards interconnectedness and solidarity.

MASSIVE BOOKSALE today through Monday!

I don’t know about you, but as a little girl I dreamt of having a library like the one in Beauty and the Beast someday. While I’m not quite there *yet*, I have certainly made strides and my family is never left without something new to read!

If you’re looking to continue growing your book collection, definitely checkout the Amazon Book Sale going on now. While I fully support shopping small/independent whenever possible, this a helpful alternative for those needing the price point or accessibility of a “big box” store.

I’ve curated book lists for , , , (just around the corner!), and much more!

📚Comment below if you’d like a link to the book lists in my storefront or click the link in bio and scroll down to select my storefront.

(And yes, I do make a small commission if you purchase at no additional cost to you. This helps me develop ABAR resources and keep as much free to you as possible. I appreciate your support.)

Helen Zia, is a Chinese-American activist, journalist, and scholar and has dedicated her life to advocating for civil rights, gender equality, and LGBTQIA2S+ rights. From her work in the Asian-American community, where she fought for redress and reparations for the internment of Japanese Americans during World War II, to her vocal support for LGBTQIA2S+ rights and gender equality, Zia's impact is profound. You can learn more about her work at HelenZia .com.

By following Helen's example and taking action, we can honor her legacy and work towards a more just and equitable society.

In the Mighty Kind Magazine Olympics Issue you can read about Fred Korematsu who was another Mighty Mentor activist who resisted the internment of Japanese Americans During World War II.

Grateful is an understatement, but it’s all I can think of at the moment.

I’m filled with gratitude for the rooms I have been invited into by people and organizations who support anti-bias/anti-racism work, value meaningful DEI movements, and champion social justice.

I have been afforded connections, perspectives, and conversations that have filled my cup time and time again.

Can’t wait to share more! Stay tuned!

What do we say as parents, caregivers, and mentors of school-age children about what is happening in Palestine?

I’m getting this question quite a bit and it echoes my own need for resources to navigate these conversations with my children. We can’t turn away just because we don’t know what to say. We need to learn (even if it is just one step ahead of our kids) and have difficult conversations. Only then can we truly be effective allies and advocates.

The research, labor, and mindfulness put into these slides was done by the wonderfully generous , who I had the pleasure of meeting and learning from earlier this week. I highly recommend following her account as well as the following accounts that offer incredibly informative voices, perspectives, and resources:

Siriana and I are working on a teach-in over Zoom specifically for parents, caregivers, and educators of school-age children for next week. If you’d like to be notified of the exact date/time and when registration opens, please make sure you’re on the Mighty Kind email list to get the info straight to your inbox. Space will be limited.

Learning alongside you, 💜.

A Statement and Global Call for Action from Kidlit Creatives for Palestine [Reposted for amplification.]

We come together to collectively voice our thoughts as kidlit creators:

As creatives whose primary audience are children, we can't sit and watch in silence as children are being killed without international intervention or condemnation.

Our mission is to spread awareness and remind the world that over a million Palestinian children are currently in dire need of safety, security and the protection of their lives.

We write for all children, and will continue to stand up for all children. We urge and ask everyone to share this message.

To stand with humanity.

I can retire now. Middle schoolers laughed at my jokes today. Not all of them, but I wasn’t about to get greedy. 😅

What I had planned to be a 20 minute presentation with a few minutes of Q&A afterward blossomed into more than an hour of incredible back and forth with this energized and genuinely engaged middle school leadership crew and their amazing teachers!

We covered topics ranging from developing leadership skills, to facing rejection, to imposter syndrome, and even a sprinkling of ways to move forward when your interests/passions are multifaceted.

The kids (and educators) had fantastic questions that kept me on my toes driving the conversation forward.

I’m honored that every single person in the room entrusted me with an example of someone they felt loved/supported by, someone they felt would need their love/support, or something they loved about themselves like we read about in Only a Trenza Away.

Love seeing these future leaders already looking for ways to serve their communities!

As one student thanked me on the way out she said, “You’re so cool!” To which I immediately replied, “Please tell my kids!” 🤣

About Sí, Se Puede: The Latino Heroes Who Changed the United States

Meet the unsung Latino rebels, artists, and activists who changed the United States--from Dolores Huerta to Desi Arnaz to Lin Manuel Miranda--in this bold and entertaining graphic history.

From community activism, to the halls of government, pop-culture, arts, and beyond, Latinos have shaped every aspect of American life. Nevertheless, these significant figures and their contributions are often left out of our textbooks. Sí, Se Puede, named after the "Yes, We Can" motto of the United Farm Workers, brings Latino history in the U.S. to the forefront.

The book follows a group of Hispanic-Americans as they embark on an interactive museum tour to meet Latino heroes they may not have learned about in school.
