Ekushey February is more than a date on the calendar — it is a tribute to our history, our resilience, and the power of language to shape who we are. Born from the historic Language Movement of 1952, this day honors the brave souls who stood up for the right to speak in our mother tongue, Bangla. International Mother Language Day celebrates language not only as a means of communication, but as the heart of culture, heritage, and identity.
This year’s theme — “Youth voices on multilingual education” — highlights the vital role young people play in shaping inclusive and empowering learning environments where every language can thrive. It calls us to listen to the next generation, to value all languages in education, and to embrace the richness that multilingualism brings to our communities. The United Nations emphasizes that multilingualism is not only a social reality but a fundamental human trait and a powerful educational approach, with youth playing a key role in making linguistic diversity more visible and valued.
As we continue to learn, speak, read, and teach Bangla, we carry the spirit of Ekushey forward. By uplifting young voices and championing multilingual education, we honor the sacrifices of the past while building a more inclusive and hopeful future for generations to come.
