About CPM’s
NY CPM, Inc. is a nonprofit 501(c)(4), organization with a mission to expand midwifery licensure in New York State to include the Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) as an independent practitioner. NY CPM, Inc. was formed out of the growing need for reform in the maternity care system in New York, where the disparities are far reaching and access to all professions of midwifery are not allowed. The inequalities in care are problematic-- from the lack of midwifery or obstetrical care in rural areas to the persistently high maternal mortality rates especially in black women, where they are 12 times more likely to die from pregnancy or childbirth than white women in New York City. Combating these inequities will be challenging but when licensed NY CPM, Inc. is committed to supporting all expecting families in New York to have accessibility to safe, culturally responsible, midwifery care.
According to the National Association of Certified Professional Midwives,"Certified Professional Midwives (CPMs) are a fast-growing segment of the midwifery profession in the United States today. Certified Professional Midwives are trained and credentialed to offer expert care, education, counseling and support to women for pregnancy, birth and the postpartum period. They have particular expertise in out-of-hospital settings. CPMs practice as autonomous health professionals working within a network of relationships with other maternity care professionals who can provide consultation when needed."
New York State can be the gold standard of maternal healthcare in the United States by creating healthcare policies that tackles all levels of inequities and supports all professions of midwifery care. NY CPM, Inc. is determined to improve accessibility to community based midwifery care to all expecting families in New York State and we are calling for every voice to be heard as we work towards licensing Certified Professional Midwives here in New York State
