Gift of Life International

Gift of Life International Our mission is to provide lifesaving cardiac treatment to children in need from developing countries Gift of Life helps children in two ways.

First, we may arrange for them to be flown to the United States where a volunteer team of medical professionals performs the necessary life-saving surgery. Alternately, we may arrange for Gift of Life affiliated hospitals, medical centers and healthcare professionals throughout the world to treat them. The latter practice reduces the need for extensive travel for our children and their families.

Meet Julia!

Julia was nine months old when she was admitted to the hospital with a congenital heart condition. She is the youngest daughter of a Palestinian family living in the camps. Her father, an accountant, is the sole provider for the family of five, including Julia.

Thanks to our partners at , Julia received the heart healing care she desperately needed.

Julia’s case was particularly special and complex. Because of the seriousness of her heart condition, she needed major open-heart surgery to repair several parts of her heart. Despite the complexity of the operation, Julia had a very good postoperative recovery and was soon able to return home in better health.

Her return home was a moment of great joy and relief for her family. Her little brother and sister were especially happy to have their baby sister back home with them. For her parents, seeing Julia healthier and recovering well brought hope, happiness, and reassurance for a brighter future.

Meet Daniel!

Daniel lives in Honduras with his mother and siblings. When he was just four months old, his family noticed burst blood vessels in his eyes, causing concern. After going to the doctor, he was referred to a pediatric cardiologist. David was then diagnosed with a congenital heart disease.

As Daniel grew older, he struggled with gaining weight, fatigue, and cyanosis (lack of oxygen causing skin to turn blue). Because of his condition, Daniel needed follow-up visits with a cardiologist every six months. For these visits, his mother would have to travel an hour to and from each visit every time. Despite these challenges, Daniel remained a loving and affectionate child who loves painting and horses.

Fortunately, thanks to our partnership with Latidos de Esperanza El Salvador, Daniel received the heart surgery he needed during one of our visits to Honduras. His procedure was a success! Now, Daniel can enjoy a healthier future and a better quality of life. ❤️

Currently, over 2,000 children in Ghana need heart healing care for a congenital heart disease. As of today there is only one center in Ghana providing this care.

Gift of Life International partnered with the pediatric cardiac team at Duke University Hospital for a visit to Ghana with interest in developing a second center for pediatric cardiac care. The visiting team was composed of medical professionals from Duke University Hospital, Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia, University of California Los Angeles (UCLA), and Texas Children’s Hospital in Houston, Texas.

Dr. Soto, Gift of Life International’s clinical consultant and pediatric cardiac surgeon, and Dr. Turek, chief of the pediatric cardiac team at Duke, worked closely with Dr. Gyan, the local pediatric cardiac surgeon in Accra. Visiting intensive care unit nurses and intensivists also worked closely with the local medical team to share knowledge and provide training in this complicated care.

Seven surgeries were completed successfully during the week, and the team was able to assess the infrastructure, equipment, and personnel available for future development. ❤️‍🩹
