The Arts of Imagination Foundation is deeply saddened to share the passing of legendary artist Tom H. John.

As the scenic designer of the original 1974 Broadway production of The Wiz, Tom’s visionary work boldly reimagined the world of Oz through the African American experience, helping to shape a musical that continues to inspire generations.

We have been honored to incorporate Tom’s original concept art for The Wiz into our educational programming, where it has sparked creativity and discovery for people of all ages. In 2024, we were especially privileged to commission a new piece from Tom commemorating the 50th anniversary of The Wiz—a work that stands as a testament to his enduring vision and spirit.

Tom’s legacy lives on through his art and in all those it continues to inspire.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his extraordinary life and work.
