The United States currently has more than 2 million people locked up in jails and prisons. A disproportionate number of them come from very few neighborhoods in the country’s biggest cities. In many places the concentration is so dense that states are spending in excess of a million dollars a year to incarcerate the residents of a single city block, aka “Million Dollar Block”. ABOUT US:
MILLION DO
LLAR BLOCK MOVEMENT is a dynamic collective of individuals, government agencies, non-profits and corporations that aims to break this cycle through community development. We invest time and resources into these blocks to transform them from crime-production neighborhoods to platforms for community enrichment. Through this transformation, residents have increased opportunities for success, neighborhoods become safer and government dollars that once went into incarcerating residents of these blocks are freed up to provide other services to citizens in need. PROJECTS:
Phase I of the MILLION DOLLAR BLOCK MOVEMENT will be to create a “Legacy Room” in a New York City school for children to gather. The Legacy Room will be a comfortable, well-lit facility filled with inspirational books, computers, art supplies and a creative curriculum of classes and workshops. Our initial partner will be Mott Hall Bridges Academy in Brownsville, New York, a neighborhood where 39% of residents live below the federal poverty line. Our vision is that the Legacy Room will give youth the tools to learn, explore the world and live to their highest potential. Eventually their successes will lead to a new definition of Million Dollar Block: an area filled with successful, high-achievers who invest in the community that supported them and reinforce a cycle of prosperity.
