NYC Pride is excited to bring back Youth Pride, a celebration of and for Two-Spirit/Indigiq***r LGBTQIA+ and ally teens, as a virtual gathering in 2021. For this year’s experience, NYC Pride has partnered with youth-focused LGBT centers, organizations, and programs nationwide like the American Indian Community House in NYC to present the iconic annual Youth Pride virtual event.

This program follows 2019’s unforgettable event at which 10,000+ LGBTQIA+ teens came together for a day of performances, appearances, activations and dancing at Central Park’s Summerstage. When 2020 made large gatherings impossible, NYC Pride took time to reimagine how to safely provide q***r youth a crucially important sense of community and togetherness at the Admirals House, Nolan Row on Governors Island. Hosted by PrEPahHontoz!

As I experienced firsthand at WorldPride, the erasure of Indigenous peoples is alive and well in the q***r community. But our culture is not a costume.

Does anyone know the contingent or groups name who wore the headresses’s during WorldPride? We’ve reached out to Heritage of Pride Staff about this and they need the group name of the marchers who did this?

At WorldPride|Stonewall 50 the Two Spirit Indigenous People’s Association marched along with millions of others celebrating the diversity of the LGBTQIA2S community. Many of our participants marched in regalia representing our unique cultures. However, during the parade we encountered a group of people wearing fuchsia war bonnets and imitation regalia. These participants had no connection to any Indigenous nation and wore the regalia “as a costume”. These racist caricatures dehumanize Indigenous peoples. Thus, we call on the WorldPride organizers to address the appropriation of Indigenous cultures by prohibiting the use of Indigenous costumes by non-Native participants, and by affirming the rights of Indigenous peoples to participate free from those who would exploit our heritage for selfish purposes. Our culture is not a costume.
