Harlem9 producers, past and present, joined community members on Monday afternoon to honor Woodie King Jr. at his memorial in NYC’s theatre district at the Barrymore where is currently playing.

A theatre filled with people who carry Woodie and ‘s legacy then descended upon the streets for hours of community.

It feels even more meaningful to honor someone who meant so much to all of us, as we will this summer.

The Harlem9 Producers join the Black Theatre Community in mourning the loss of our king. Our Uncle, father, Godfather., Woodie King Jr. Founder and former Artistic Director of .

He was the reason, dare we say for all of us…

Organizations like Harlem9 stand on the landscape that he was part of building alongside visionaries like Dr. Barbara Ann Teer The National Black Theatre: Institute for Action Arts and many others.

Our work continues in their honor.

Our deepest condolences to Woodies family and wife, Elizabeth VanDyke , Artistic Director of New Federal Theatre.

The Harlem9 Producers are deeply saddened by the sudden passing of Nilan, Associate Artistic Director of The Drama League. Nilan was a Harlem9 alum, a featured playwright in 2016.

We are honored to have one of his plays, “Shadow in the Corner” published in our 3rd 48 Hours in… Harlem anthology. 🙏🏾

His voice, generosity, and commitment to bold, inclusive storytelling left an indelible mark on our community and the field at large.

We hold Nilan’s loved ones and collaborators in our hearts, and we remain grateful for the work he shared with us and the legacy he leaves behind.
