3GNY - Descendants of Holocaust Survivors

3GNY - Descendants of Holocaust Survivors 3GNY is a NYC-based community formed by grandchildren of Holocaust survivors, to carry on the storie Now is the time to take responsibility for these stories.

WEDU is the premier educational initiative to train grandchildren of survivors to learn and share their family history in classrooms. We are excited to share “WEDU” (We Educate) – our education initiative that empowers grandchildren of survivors to bring our family stories and lessons of the Holocaust to school classrooms. Developed under the guidance of Facing History and Ourselves, along with su

pport from Yad Vashem, WEDU prepares participants to learn and teach their family stories. WEDU is a powerful contribution to Holocaust education:

URGENCY: As the population of Holocaust survivors declines, their stories should not be lost with them. PERSONAL: As a living link to our grandparents’ stories, we are in a special position to elevate the individual experience from the collective. RELEVANCE TO ALL: The Holocaust serves as an instructive entry point for examining prejudice today. This program will make connections between historical events and issues of intolerance and persecution that remain with us. SOCIAL ACTION: In a multicultural society, we all have a stake in challenging assumptions. This program will actively engage students to think about ways to confront intolerance and prejudice. Your involvement is necessary. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer and sharing your family story in a classroom:

Please contact [email protected] for information on our next training session, and for any questions. If you prefer not to speak in the classroom, there are other ways to volunteer:

To mark Professor Elie Wiesel’s 10th Yahrzeit, which is today, Rabbi Dr. Ariel Burger, Director of the Witness Institute, and Dr. Avraham Rosen invite us to engage in collective positive actions, keeping in mind our teacher/mentor/friend/family member—and each other.

They have developed 10 collective acts of goodness that may well shift the balance of the world toward hope and redemption; they will most certainly bring merit to the soul of Eliezer ben Shlomo haLevi, ztz”l, Elie Wiesel:

1. Listen to somebody who needs to be listened to.

2. Choose a Hasidic tale from Souls on Fire, Sages and Dreamers, Filled with Fire and Light, or another of Professor Wiesel’s books, and read it aloud to a friend, a child, a grandchild, or a grandparent. Discuss it together.

3. Buy a hungry person a meal, with a smile.

4. Write a poem or prayer about something broken in the world, and how it might be fixed or addressed.

5. Leave a note of encouragement in a public place where someone in need will find it.

6. Decide to be a witness and not a spectator. This means to refuse to ignore the suffering of others, to increase your sensitivity to those around you over time, and to take responsibility for the world around you. Write this commitment down and put it somewhere you will see it daily.

7. Tell or write about Prof. Wiesel’s love of Israel and Jerusalem. Say why it is important to know this.

8. Buy one of Prof. Wiesel’s books that you don’t yet own; buy another for a friend; think of buying for a class or reading group.

9. Follow the traditional path: Study Mishnah in the merit of Prof. Wiesel. Give charity in the merit and memory of Prof. Wiesel, saying out loud that you’re doing so for the elevation of the soul of Eliezer ben Shlomo Halevi, of righteous memory.

10. Pray for a redeemed world.
