Freedom to dream.

Freedom to create.

Freedom to collaborate.

Through the lens.

This past Independence Day, The Josephine Herrick Project celebrated the freedom to create, express and imagine.
At the Josephine Herrick Project, we believe that creativity is a powerful form of freedom, one that transcends barriers and empowers those around us.

We carry this ideal through all our programs, and instill this belief in each of our insightful students. Through the lens of a camera our participants not only discover art- but the freedom to tell their own story.

We hope everyone had a safe, joyful and inspiring 4th of July from all of us at the Josephine Herrick Project!

Starting summer programs soon... stay tuned for more on our Instagram page!

ConGraduation!!!!!

We are so thrilled to have worked with such talented and curious youth with entrepreneurial spirit who joined our team this spring. Josephine Herrick provides internship opportunities to students who have an interest in photography, marketing, grant writing, arts admin, and social media.

Our apprentices joined us for a 3-month commitment and, based on their interest and skill sets, we were able to coordinate a job position for them that would use those talents and grow from within. They officially end the program with tangible understanding of how a nonprofit works in the photography industry.

We are so thankful to all of our apprentices who have been with in recent years.
And excited for those that are graduating this week. You were a tremendous help in our outreach to amplify voices, serve the community, and help others tell their stories.

Here are some things our Apprentices had to say…

Experimental Tone
Staten Island Vet Center Exhibition
Our photography class at the Staten Island Veteran Center was anything but ordinary—we played with light and shadow, made hilariously wobbly one-minute sculptures (some held together by sheer willpower), and got real cozy with limited light. Who needs a fancy studio when you’ve got a flashlight, a cardboard box, and a bit of imagination?

By the end, what started as technical exercises and playful experiments turned into meaningful personal projects. Participants captured slices of their world—from stoops and sidewalks to the people, pets, and places that bring them joy. We also explored bookmaking and sequencing, arranging images to build small visual stories and shape a unique photographic vocabulary. Whether it was about community, connection, or just catching that one perfect photo of a snail mid-glide, the results were as heartfelt as they were creative.
