Every one of them deserves a story in their own language.

When Harvard Business School wants to understand how literacy reaches children in East Africa, they come to NABU.

We were proud to welcome a team of HBS students to Nairobi, Kenya as part of the FIELD Global Capstone program, one of 156 partner organisations selected globally, supporting an immersive learning experience for over 900 students worldwide.

During their visit, students engaged directly with local communities, explored the NABU app experience on the ground, and brought fresh perspectives that will sharpen how we reach children across the region.

This is what it looks like when the world takes African children’s literacy seriously.

NABU and GSM Systems have partnered through the EmpowerREAD initiative, a three-year effort designed to expand access to literacy across South Africa through culturally relevant, mother-tongue reading materials.

Together, we aim to deploy more than 5,000 circular reading devices across 54 schools, helping children access books in the languages they understand best, while building stronger reading foundations for long-term learning.

The initiative combines local language content, teacher support, and sustainable technology infrastructure to ensure more children can read, learn, and grow through stories that reflect their communities and experiences.

We are currently raising $300,000 to support implementation and expand access to more learners and classrooms.

Join us in helping more children build lifelong reading habits.

The data is clear: children learn best in the language they speak at home. Yet millions are expected to learn to read in a language they are still trying to understand. That gap affects confidence, comprehension, and long-term learning.

This World Book Day, we’re advocating for something simple: every child deserves access to stories in the language they know best. When children read in their mother tongue, they understand more, participate more, and build stronger reading foundations.

Let’s make literacy more inclusive, one story at a time.

Did you know that 9 in 10 children in Africa cant read by age 10? Stories in the languages children speak at home and with characters they can relate to, can change that.

That’s why, together with Aaron Grandidier-Nkanang , NABU is bringing his story to life for children across Nigeria. Because representation matters. And stories shape what children believe they can become.
