Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board

Manhattan Solid Waste Advisory Board We are a Board comprised of waste and recycling industry experts and concerned citizens, appointed by the Manhattan Borough President's Office.

The Solid Waste Advisory Board of Manhattan is a non-profit, non-governmental organization dedicated to increasing recycling, reducing solid waste, and advancing solid waste policy in New York City. We meet once per month to hear speakers in various areas related to our mission and provide a forum for advancing solid waste policy. We host several events and fundraisers annually and collaborate on

many other worthwhile programs with partners. The SWAB has an annual Composting Grant Program run in collaboration with the Office of Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer and Citizen Committee for New York City. The program, partially funded by the SWAB, awards thousands of dollars worth of grants to organizations in NYC wishing to start or expand their neighborhood composting programs. Contact us if you are interested in attending a meeting.

Our first ZERO WASTE Holiday party was a smashing success!

We welcomed special guest Mariel Dela Cruz from MBPO office and our long time supporter who graced us with her presence.

Suggestions for planning a less waste event:

1. We did not order more food than was needed preventing excess food waste
- we provided take out containers for folks to bring food home.

2. Provide bamboo utensils, plates and cups
- In total we diverted 3lbs of food waste from landfill and one of our members took it home to compost at her building

2. Serving utensils: we informed our caterer that we did not need the plastic serving utensils
- all of our serving utensils were metal - no plastic
- Aluminum food trays were rinsed and folded down for recycling

3. All the decor was recyclable including the paper table protector.
- Charlie Brown table toppers and pinecones are all compostable

4. We offered water and lemonade in beverage containers rather than single serve.
- all wine and beer containers were recycled along with the bottle caps and cork.

5. Zero waste raffle
- members donated items that they no longer needed

Council Member Crystal Hudson regarding Intro 0256-2024. Council Member Hudson is the CM for New York City’s District 35 in Brooklyn, representing the neighborhoods of Crown Heights, Prospect Heights, Clinton Hill, and Fort Greene. A third-generation Brooklynite, she was first elected in 2021 and made history as one of the first out gay Black women ever elected in New York City. Crystal is a public servant committed to making government more accessible for more people. As a first-term Council Member, she passed more bills than any other first-term member in Brooklyn and was second among all new members. She has authored the Black Agenda for New York City and co-authored the Marsha & Sylvia Plan, a first-of-its-kind policy agenda to support LGBTQIA+ New Yorkers. Crystal is chair of the Committee on Aging and also serves as co-chair of the Council’s Black, Latino, and Asian Caucus.

About Intro 0256. This bill would require the commissioner of sanitation to study and report on the feasibility and environmental effects of a mandate for households to separate, and the department of sanitation to collect, textile waste. The study would consider, among other things, the costs, potential benefits, and potential negative effects of such a mandate.
